new here Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Hello, Does anyone have any opinions about or experiences with UC Riverside's doctoral school psychology program? I have asked this question elsewhere, and one person replied, but I was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts. Thanks so much!
athlete2academic Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 I also applied to this program, so I too would be interested in hearing any opinions and/or experiences. I've heard people make various comments about the future of the program, whether or not it will continue to be upheld (I can only imagine you're asking these questions because of the same reasons, NEW HERE). So, just like NEW HERE, I bid you thanks for any insight you can offer us.
new here Posted January 3, 2015 Author Posted January 3, 2015 Hi athlete2academic, Yes, I only asked this question because I had heard one comment about how the program is struggling. Although if you've heard similar things, maybe there's some truth to this? I actually decided to add this program to my list at the very last minute, since I was interested in one of the faculty member's research. I was going to submit their application tomorrow morning (yup,at the very last minute), but now I'm wondering if I should even bother.
iPsych Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I applied to this program during the last application cycle so I'm not sure if my experience/information accurately reflects the current state of the program. I applied due to interest in one of the professor's research, the fact that they have a center dedicated to working with families and children with autism (my primary interest), focus on licensure (I believe this is pretty new for them; one of their newest faculty members was pioneering this movement) and a desire to apply to a school geographically out of my comfort zone. During the interview day I found out that my research interest was no longer my POI's primary research interest. I also realized that I wanted to attend a university with more faculty. However, the faculty and students were extremely friendly and professional throughout the interview day. I had a really enjoyable experience. I ended up being accepted into the program and they offered probably the best funding offer I received throughout the cycle (a 4 year fellowship package). I ended up declining for the reasons stated above: small faculty and only a mild match of research interests. In the end, it was not enough to convince me to move across the country. However, for someone who may be more local, these reasons may not have been a deterrent. What reasons do you have for thinking that the program is not sustainable?
athlete2academic Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Hey iPsych, Thanks for you input. The notion that the program was heading in the wrong direction was merely a product of a few past posters commenting on what they had heard about the program from their own faculty. I was trying not to make any assumptions because, from what I can tell, the program could be the right fit. In other words, I was not given any sustainable evidence that the program is struggling to stay afloat. Again, thanks for your words. This could all just be hearsay. I hope it is, actually.
iPsych Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 No problem! I wish I had seen this post sooner. Did you end up submitting the application?
ShiningStargirl Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 Hey all! I got an invitation for an interview for the Fall 2017 School Psychology Program. I was wondering if you guys had any tips for me and whether or not there was an essay portion for the interview process. Thanks!!!
