  1. Lehigh also offers funding to many of it's Ed.S. students. As previous posters said it's not guaranteed and sometimes you have to seek out the opportunities yourself; they have a corresponding Ph.D. program so the doc students take priority but if there's any additional funds left it goes to the specialist students.
  2. Congratulations to everyone on their acceptances/interviews! Nope! Wear whatever you're most comfortable in Most of my program dresses pretty casually for class (jeans, cardigans, sweaters, sundresses when it's warmer) if we don't have to go to a school immediately before/after. Sometimes for night classes people will wear hoodies and jeans since it's late at night and we've all had a long day. Some students will wear gym clothes if they plan on going to workout right after a morning class. Professors don't seem to mind either way
  3. Yes, this is pretty typical for that program! I was interviewed (and accepted) for their PhD last year; there was no individual interview at all. I did not have to do a writing prompt but maybe that's something they include on a year-by-year basis
  4. feeling some application season nostalgia today

  5. No problem! I wish I had seen this post sooner. Did you end up submitting the application?
  6. I applied to this program during the last application cycle so I'm not sure if my experience/information accurately reflects the current state of the program. I applied due to interest in one of the professor's research, the fact that they have a center dedicated to working with families and children with autism (my primary interest), focus on licensure (I believe this is pretty new for them; one of their newest faculty members was pioneering this movement) and a desire to apply to a school geographically out of my comfort zone. During the interview day I found out that my research interest was no longer my POI's primary research interest. I also realized that I wanted to attend a university with more faculty. However, the faculty and students were extremely friendly and professional throughout the interview day. I had a really enjoyable experience. I ended up being accepted into the program and they offered probably the best funding offer I received throughout the cycle (a 4 year fellowship package). I ended up declining for the reasons stated above: small faculty and only a mild match of research interests. In the end, it was not enough to convince me to move across the country. However, for someone who may be more local, these reasons may not have been a deterrent. What reasons do you have for thinking that the program is not sustainable?
  7. officially moving in today!

  8. sooo much paperwork involved in the moving/starting school process >.<

  9. 18 days till move-in!

  10. This happened to me during my application process. I sent an email saying: Dear Dr. XXX, Thank you for this exciting news! XXX is one of my top choice programs (note: you may want to add for what reasons. I didn't because I had made it clear in a thank you email that I had sent previously) and I look forward to receiving an official offer in the near future. Thank you, again! Best, XXX
  11. finally got my official aid letter. full tuition + stipend! whoop whoop!

Good roomies are worth their weight in gold.

  13. I think that it is possible to find school psych programs with faculty who have an interested in trauma (though, it will be hard to find those specifically interested in refugee-related traumas). Have you considered counseling psych programs? Counseling psychologists can work in schools after obtaining the necessary qualifications

I'm looking for roommates to share a 4 bedroom/2 bath house on the south side not far from Fahy bridge. It's a newly renovated building with new appliances, a washer/dryer and comes furnished. Message me if you're interested!

  16. My newest healthy habit is staying hydrated. I wasn't so great at this before since a lot of my work requires me being out in the field and thus away from a bathroom. Now, I religiously have a glass of water immediately after waking up and before going to bed and I usually have a glass before meals. When I find myself sitting at my desk, watching TV or reading I always keep a glass of water near me and make sure that I finish at least one glassful before the end of my episode/chapter/whatever it is I'm doing.
  17. I sent thank you cards in the mail after deadlines were over then sent an email a few weeks ago with my final decision!
  18. I found out about research interests mainly through the university websites' faculty profiles. Some schools are better about updating their sites than others so I think it is also okay to email potential POIs telling them that you're interested in their schools program and want to inquire about their current projects/projects they'll have for 2014-2015. I didn't do this but other applicants definitely did! Your second question also depends on the school. Some schools have a financial aid application that supplements the application for admission and also has to be completed before the app deadline. Some schools just had a checkbox on the admission application to indicate whether or not you want to be considered for funding. One school I applied to had completely different deadlines for completing the financial aid app (months after the original application was due). Hope this helps!
  19. Hi there, I can't speak to the quality of the masters program at St. John's (which is what I think you're talking about because the PsyD program definitely does not have rolling admissions) but the PsyD program is great! They give a generous amount of financial aid for a NYC school and the faculty members take a real interest in their students. The program is also working on incorporating more training in neuropsych testing and providing more opportunities to work with children with ASD if those are things that you're interested in. As far as the "negatives" that you listed I think that re-taking the GRE is a good step. You can't go back and change your MA grades and you can't determine how the admissions committee will interpret the re-taking of the course and switching schools but you CAN take control your GRE score! You could also use a paragraph in your personal statement to explain the change of schools and re-taking of the course if you feel that it needs some explanation. The research experience, publications and conferences will definitely work in your favor! Since you already have your MA in Ed Psych and it seems like most of your experience is research-based I feel like a PhD program would make more sense for you than getting another master's degree. Can you explain why you're torn between the two degrees? Maybe there's something I'm not understanding. Best of luck!
  20. Same to you gingin! Can't wait for the school year to start already!
  21. so a school who's offer of acceptance I declined weeks ago just sent me a letter in the mail saying that I was waitlisted and they regrettably can not offer me a spot in their program for the upcoming year....uhm....okay?

Yeah I'm sure it does. I find it strange that this is the common practice for schools. I would think that by now they would have developed a generic "thanks for considering us and best of luck at your chosen school" letter for their purposes

Maybe they still want to keep the upper hand.

One of my grad mentors mentioned that a school has something to gain the more people they "reject", so maybe it's just a technicality for them.

  22. Two weeks ago I was beyond thrilled to have finally made a decision! I was giddy telling everyone the news and I even ordered myself a sweatshirt from my new university. Now that the initial excitement has worn off I'm definitely feeling nervous about leaving my friends and family behind! I feel like I'm gonna be out on this new adventure all alone and everyone's gonna move on with their lives without me and I'm gonna miss out on their new accomplishments. I have to keep reminding myself what a perfect fit my program is for me and how excited I was to be there for interview day. AND that I'll be making new friends within my cohort once I arrive who I will (hopefully!) end up becoming as close with as I am with my current college/high school friends. I also agree with starofdawn that each school has a different way of handling their incoming class and that makes a huge difference! Long story short, I totally hear where you're coming from!
  23. I hope everyone survived D-day unscathed!

  24. There's something for everyone in the city! You'll adjust more quickly than you think Congrats!
  25. SOOO excited for everyone making their final decisions! I hope that by the end of the day tomorrow everyone is happy with their choices haoran - are you looking at masters/specialist programs or doctoral? I applied to a few of the doctoral programs in NYC. I found that St. John's PsyD program offered the most financial aid.
