  1. Money isn't everything! Especially when one program is obviously a better choice than the other I too may have to deal with the changing my drivers license to pay in-state tuition struggle *sigh* decisions are tough but at least we have options!
  2. That's excellent! Thank you
  3. Is the program you love offering any aid at all? Would the debt be worth being at that program or do you also like the one that's giving you a free ride enough that once you start school you wouldn't even miss the first program?

I did my undergrad at Fordham! The area immediately around the school is not the safest once the sun goes down (and sometimes even in broad daylight). The safest street to live on is Arthur Avenue (though I would not recommend living further down than 188th street simply because walking alone at night can get a little scary). Like any other neighborhood in the world, you have to be smart when you're out in public. Don't have your phone or wallet out, try not to walk alone at night and just be aware of your surroundings. I lived on campus in the Bronx for four years and lived off campus on Arthur Avenue for one summer. Throughout my years I did a LOT of commuting (alone) around the Bronx, Harlem and Manhattan and have never been mugged, had my belongings stolen or had my home broken into (though I know people who have had these things happen to them). As previously mentioned, Throgs Neck is also a good area to live in however I am not sure how easy it is to travel to campus from that area Feel free to message me if you have any questions!
  5. This may seem like a silly question but how typical is it for earthquakes to occur in southern California? Obviously, I don't expect anyone here to be a weather person and predict how many earthquakes may or may not happen in the next few years but has anyone experienced any during their years in/around riverside? Were they serious or small? I'm from the greater New York area so earthquakes are not something I have a lot (read: any) experience with
  6. officially DONE with interviews!

  7. I am so glad we all have each other to vent to
  8. WARNING: this is a rant Personally, I'm tired of everyone I talk to offering their opinions about which school I should go to and why. It's not that I don't appreciate advice from time to time but I think it's soooo easy for other people to say "Well School A seems like the best choice because of Reason X" or "School B doesn't seem like a good choice because it's located in Neighborhood Y" when THEY'RE not the ones who will be paying for it, attending, or moving to said neighborhood. This decision is hard enough without you projecting your personal regrets and values on me, thank you very much.
  9. I think asking the director for her email is a good idea!

It would be easy to commute from Manhattan to Garden City via the LIRR but rent in NYC can be crazy! Brooklyn would be a little bit tougher to commute from. You'd either have to take the subway to Penn to take the LIRR or take the subway to the Atlantic Terminal to get the LIRR and you'd probably have to transfer at Jamaica to get onto the train that goes to GC
  11. twiddling my thumbs waiting on funding packages...#thestruggle

  12. I've waited 6-7 days to send a thank you email before (obviously not ideal but things get in the way sometimes!) and professors don't seem to be put off by how long it took me to thank them!
  13. The original Pokemon series is now on Netflix... However, jjduval's suggestion of hitting the gym is definitely the more productive/healthy option
  14. I think there's a direct correlation between how good of a fit you are with a program and how easy it is for you to write a genuine "thank you for the interview" email to said program

hahaha I'm glad that my claim has a small degree of convergent validity ;)

  15. The April 15th deadline for commitment is a rule for APA accredited schools. Is the program accredited? I agree that it is crazy to commit to a school this early in the game if you haven't gone on all of your interviews yet. Like you said, I'm sure they expect that many students will take the offer then go for another program with more funding. I wouldn't worry about it "looking bad"
  16. Yep, I always send a thank you email! Nothing too fancy, just something that says thanks for taking the time to interview me and pointing out something that I really enjoyed about the interview/school/etc. One school that I interviewed at asked specifically NOT to send a thank you email so unless you interview at a school that tells you the same, I'm sure that sending a thank you is fine!
  17. Mine are picking up too! I have three interviews next week! I think that because of the snow causing office closings and delays in processing apps plus the NASP conference this week most schools in the north east have waited till now to really get the ball
  18. got into Lehigh!!!!!! =D

  19. I think it would be okay to ask for a phone/Skype interview if there's no opportunity to speak to grad students, no campus tour, etc. and you'd have to travel very far to make it (i.e. a long plane ride). Basically, if it's not an all day interview process and it would take you four times as long to get there as it would to actually interview I would ask
  20. It seems to me they do everything on a rolling basis. I saw two people post acceptances then two more people post interviews so I guess they just process everyone as they come in?
  21. I'm not sure if this is different for clinical programs but I applied to a mixture of PhD and PsyD programs for school psych and even for the PsyD programs I talked about a POI both in my personal statement and during my interview. Typically, my interview was with the POI I mentioned in my personal statement so I think it would be a good idea to do a little research on a POI that way you have something to talk about with them if the topic of research comes up!
  22. I never imagined I'd be going on 7 interviews! Stoked :)

  23. That is nuts! 15 minutes is hardly any time at all, especially considering how far you're traveling. Is the program really appealing to you?
  24. I think that it depends on how you picture yourself as a school psychologist after graduating. Do you see yourself working in schools for the entirety of your career or do you also want to conduct research studies or teach at universities? I think that makes the difference between choosing between the two degrees. I believe that PsyDs and EdSs have equal opportunities to work if you simply look at the school factor. Like you said, PsyDs have a wider range because they can work in lab or colleges but if thats not for you, then it sounds like EdS would be the way to go!
