Utopus Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Do you think I should put an index in my writing sample. I am an international applicant so I don't know what US universities are expecting in a writing sample. I am always adding the abstract in the paper, do you think that is necessary?
rising_star Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 There's definitely no need for an index. You can include an abstract if you'd like, as it's pretty common in the social sciences and "natural" sciences to do so. I think an abstract is less common in the humanities. To me, having the abstract makes sense when your writing sample is an excerpt of a longer piece since it will help the readers understand the overall argument and content of the paper, even if they only have 10-15 pages of it to read.
drownsoda Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 If it's a humanities paper, I'd say absolutely not. I have a B.A. in English and have never once indexed a paper the entire time I've been in college. If it's a science piece though, it may be appropriate.
Utopus Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 Thanks for the replies. I also have submitted some of my writing samples without adding a "Contents" section. Do you think it will be a problem?
