kperk56 Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Hello all! I received my bachelor's a few years ago in Speech and Hearing Sciences at Ohio State University. I am just now beginning to really consider Speech Pathology as a career, and therefore, also as a graduate degree. I will not begin applying to schools until late this year in order to begin in the Fall 2016 semester, but I figured a little research beforehand couldn't hurt. I am really interested in traumatic brain injury, and an ideal setting for me would certainly be a hospital. I was wondering if anyone has any information on good schools for Medical Speech Pathology? I am having trouble finding a useful, culminating list for this specific sector. I really liked what I saw from the U of Washington's MedSLP Program, but I know there have to be several more out there at other great institutions. So if you have any information, please do share! Or if you have similar interests as me and have any bits of advice or good reading materials, feel free to share that as well! Thanks! -Kevin
sayjo Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Rush University focuses heavily on the medical side. Their program is actually located inside Rush Hospital in Chicago. A family member of mine attended Rush and had the opportunity to do many unique medical placements (such as working as part of a craniofacial team). Additionally, their coursework is very in depth compared to other schools. I believe my family member had entire courses on topics such as head & neck cancer, TBI, etc. Rush's program is very rigorous though - so if you decide to go there, be prepared to work hard! bindlestiff 1
EmilyA Posted February 14, 2015 Posted February 14, 2015 I'm interested in TBI and neurogenic disorders, too, but am restricting my applications to Ohio schools. What about OSU, Kevin? I'd think they'd have a direct link to the great medical system right there. Does anyone have ideas on which schools in Ohio are more / most focused on medical SLP?

Emily, I know Akron and Case both have great medical programs besides Ohio State. Akron has one of the top TBI professors/researchers in the country Dr. DePompei. Case focuses completely on Medical and do not even certify you to work in the Schools. They have great medical facilities and research labs.
EmilyA Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Thank you! That's so interesting, that Case doesn't even certify for schools. I've been accepted at OU so far and am really happy about it. They seem to have a good medical focus. They also have a very cool global health initiative, with summer clinical programs in Africa and Asia, that seems unique so far. Or are there others maybe? any thoughts or leads on CD and global health programs? (maybe I'll start a separate thread). What are people's impressions of how important the individual school choice and its reputation and/or ranking is, ultimately, when you're out in the job market? Is it important within the region only, like Ohio, or nationally, if you look for work in another region? I haven't seen any forums like this but maybe there are some, not sure.
