Is it uncommon to hear back from a school before the application deadline?

I heard back from UW for their MPA program and they also offered me a scholarship. I was kind of surprised and feel like I'm being super paranoid thinking that this might be a glitch since their application deadline isn't until next week and on the website it says that decisions will come out around mid-March.

Has anyone known of other people getting accepted before the deadline?

Hi Glitter1nTheAir,

I just heard back from Evans too, offering me admission for the MPA program. No word on funding though (maybe because I'm an international student?). I've written back to them asking about funding and whether that news gets conveyed separately (past years' posts indicate that UW Evans does send out these notifications in a separate mail). I'm really hoping they do fund me, otherwise it'd be a challenge to attend Evans.

But I was really surprised to get such an early decision...I suppose that's because I applied in Early December itself?

I think you should call them for confirmation to rest your nerves a bit.

Yet, I want to congratulate you on being accepted and receiving a scholarship. I would love to hear back about my applications, but I don't think I will for at least a month.

Congrats! It makes me feel better that someone else has heard back too. Hopefully you will hear back about getting some funding!

I turned in my application only three weeks ago... Part of the reason I was so surprised.

Congrats to you too! (Totally forgot to do that..)

Yea fingers crossed I get some funding - I'm slightly hopeful, seeing as we are the first wave of students to be getting offers...let's see.

Don't be concerned! This happens quite a bit, both from personal experience and from the results board. It seems that schools that really want an applicant (and tend to offer a scholarship/fellowship) will notify you ASAP even if it's before the deadline (in my case, all my letters weren't even in yet). The truth of the matter is that they really want you, and by notifying you early they know they'll be on your mind. Take it as a compliment and don't fret -- it's likely legit! For a second I had the same sense of doubt as well, but just enjoy! And of course, many congrats :)

Don't worry! It definitely happens. As argon214 said, it's a sign that they are extremely interested in you! That's a good thing. Besides, at the end of your PhD, when you're applying for academic jobs, you'll get rejections within a week of the deadline sometimes. That is a sucky feeling since it means they weren't interested in you at all. So, enjoy it while it lasts!
