moccacad Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Hi guys, I applied to a Phd in art history and just received a mail from Uchicago encouraging me to apply to an FLAS fellowship. It seems like an automatic mail and in the content they say that it does not guarantee admittance, but is it a good sign that I am being seriously considered? Or perhaps they send it to all the U.S. citizen applicants? Did all of you get it as well? Here is the content of the mail: We are delighted that you have applied to the University of Chicago and are impressed by your academic preparation. We want you to be considered for a University of Chicago Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) academic-year fellowship based on your strong qualifications and the possibility that you will study an eligible foreign language next year if you are admitted. Eligible languages are listed here. We would like to forward your admissions application to the FLAS fellowship committee. For you to be considered for this competition, we ask that you fill out the general FLAS application form (attached) and submit it through your account at https://apply-humanities.uchicago.edu/apply/status/ by the end of the day Friday, February 6. When you log in to your status page you may submit it to the “Upload Materials” section. You do not need to submit additional materials (i.e. statement, language recommendation) as we can draw them from your application for admission. Agreeing to compete for a FLAS fellowship does not mean that you will be extended an offer of admission. However, the timing of the FLAS decisions is such that we need to ask you at this early date to consider competing for this fellowship. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Best wishes, Thanks! GhostsBeforeBreakfast 1
GhostsBeforeBreakfast Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I received the same e-mail and I am very curious about it as well.
pastette Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Is there a specific language on the lists that you've actually studied or mention that you want to study? I got it too and I wonder if it might be automatic.
Soleil ت Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 (edited) Hi everybody. It turns out I got this same email, and I checked here to see if it was unique or automatic. I'm not Art History, however; I'm in Linguistics. Good luck to everybody! Edit: In response to pastette, I study French and expressed an interest in Romance linguistics; I'm not sure if they are simply recruiting applicants for any language or if they considered me as a potential candidate for Portuguese in particular (it didn't say). Honestly, I'd love to study any of the languages on the list, hehe. Edited January 13, 2015 by Soleil ت
moccacad Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 I am interested in Middle Eastern art and expressed my wishes to learn Arabic and Persian. But even though my grades are great I don't think that I am such a great fit... That is why I was so surprised. But if we all got it I can only assume that it is automatic and sent to everyone. Oh well. On that note, what is better- the year-long fellowship or the summer fellowship? I think that studying a language alongside three seminars on the first year is pretty tough, but on the plus side the perks are better. Any thoughts?
GhostsBeforeBreakfast Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 "However, if you are interested in studying another language, contact the appropriate Area Center as this list is not exclusive." Hmmm.
cafeamericanooo Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 I got this as well after applying to a PhD in art history, I believe it is automatic unfortunately. Doesn't hurt to apply though!
herbieoh Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 For international students wondering why they haven't got that email. = FLAS is for American citizens and green card holders. Thanks
terralily Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 Yeah. I applied to Chicago and did not receive this...so clearly not automatic. poo. moccacad 1
moccacad Posted January 23, 2015 Author Posted January 23, 2015 Yeah. I applied to Chicago and did not receive this...so clearly not automatic. poo. Sorry, but hey at least you heard good news from Emory Thanks for sharing, it's really helpful! Also, I formed a theory with one of the guys from this thread that they sent it to students that are already proficient in 2-3 languages, so perhaps it doesn't really mean anything... Thanks again for shedding light on the situation!
MaytheSchwartzBeWithYou Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I applied to UChicago - Art History and didn't receive an email, but my main languages are French and German. I freaked out when I first saw this thread, but if you read the FLAS website carefully, it says: "LANGUAGE OFFERINGS FOR 2015-2016 Additional languages in the funded world areas may be approved on a case-by-case basis. Commonly-taught languages (German, Spanish, French) are not funded by FLAS." So it's also possible some people aren't getting the invitation to apply because it isn't applicable to your field. :-) (At least I hope that's what it means!)
GhostsBeforeBreakfast Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 (edited) My two languages are French and German and it would be a huge stretch to take any of the languages on the initial list for my concentration. Not to completely kill your theory, I may have received the fellowship invitation because I said I would take all available opportunities if I were to be accepted. MaytheSchwartzBeWithYou Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 LOL, it's all speculation, really - I have no idea. I was telling another poster my expertise is in American post-Holocaust, so it could be anything that determines whether you get "the email" - the program you apply to, your academic focus, your financial/academic standing, etc. etc. Though I'm confident I have a very strong application, it could also be that I simply don't qualify. :-/ Alas, that's life! Sheis, do you have a Masters? I noticed in your profile you are applying to a few Masters programs in addition to the PhD programs (I'm something of a newbie here, so could be reading something incorrectly). I understand UChicago accepts both BA and MA students for the PhD, and wonder if this makes a difference, as well.
pastette Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Are there programs that DON'T accept master's students?
GhostsBeforeBreakfast Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I do not have an MA. Good observation 'Schwartz. All programs accept MA students, sometimes even preferring them.
MaytheSchwartzBeWithYou Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 BTW, Sheis, I meant absolutely nothing negative when I asked about you having a Masters. :-) I just wanted to clarify that. It was merely an investigative question!
GhostsBeforeBreakfast Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 No offense was taken, as it is common for the application pool to consist of both those with and without MAs. Also, good luck to you!
