MBDT Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 (edited) Hi all -- I may be jumping the gun a bit here, considering that acceptances/rejections are still on the way. Nonetheless... I just received a job offer for summer employment through July. This is a dream job opportunity, and I am excited to accept it. However, do some PhD programs require a summer commitment prior to enrolling in the fall? None of the programs I applied to explicitly said I must be available in the summer, but do any of you have experience/information about the possibility of summer commitments? I would, of course, turn down this job if it meant I couldn't accept a PhD offer... However, I would really love to do both, if possible. Thank you in advance! Edited January 16, 2015 by MBDT
MaxWeberHasAPosse Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 No, I don't think so. You *have to* commit to the program by April 15th, usually. And it would be wise to move to X city by late July or early August. If you are asking whether or not you can work *while* doing the PhD, the answer is usually a no (not that you would want to). Hope this helps.
rising_star Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Most programs don't expect you to be available until early August, at the earliest. The exception would be if you're someone's research assistant and they want you to start sooner. I say pursue the job opportunity!
SOCphd15 Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 I've only seen one program require that you come early (Nebraska). If you did not take undergraduate statistics or if your grade was below what they wanted, they require you to come early to take a course before starting their program.
