raggy Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 I noticed a bunch of people received interviews from UC Berkeley. I still haven't heard anything from them, and I am starting to get a little worried. Which professors contacted you for the interviews? Also, if you don't mind, could you share your credentials (research exp, university, gpa, gre, publications etc. )? whosthat 1
raggy Posted January 19, 2015 Author Posted January 19, 2015 To clarify, I am referring to the Computer Science PhD program at Berkeley.
phdreally Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I was contacted by two profs. First was my POI. Next from a prof in the ad-comm. My background is a bit atypical. ~11years of work experience (startup; acquired), lots of open source. undergrad from not a well known college.
nllptr Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 Apparently they conduct the admissions process in two phases. They interview everyone who makes it to the second phase so they can get a better idea of the candidates. Apparently people in the second phase are more or less equally qualified and the decision from their is more of a coin flip than anything.
whosthat Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I'm also interested in getting more information (about Berkeley EECS and Stanford CS in particular). If some of you get interviewed, consider asking some of these questions and sharing with the group: What stage of the process is admissions for this department in? (e.g. shortlisting is finished, interviews are half-way through) For this particular department, are all short-listed candidates interviewed or only the candidates being considered for fellowship or borderline candidates? What is the department planning on finishing notifying all accepted candidates? In past years, it seems all short-listed candidates for Berkeley EECS have been interviewed. It would be interesting to confirm if this is still the case, what the progress of the interviews is and whether that includes people who are living abroad.
nllptr Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 According to the professor I spoke to everyone on the short list is interviewed.
raggy Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Well that's a bummer Does anyone know what's the current stage for the University of Washington PhD applications?
whosthat Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 According to the professor I spoke to everyone on the short list is interviewed. Well that is pretty damning for me, but thank you for this information... raggy 1
heilaw Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 (edited) Do they finish interviewing all shortlisted candidates? I am very worried about it... Edited January 27, 2015 by heilaw
ribble Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 (edited) I applied to Berkeley and haven't been contacted for an interview. I'm not that hopeful, though a couple of posts in past years have indicated that this is not a strict prerequisite to admissions. Still, it seems like the vast majority get an interview in some form. My credentials: Top 30 state school GRE: 170Q/161V/4.5 GPA: 3.86 (3.98 or so in computer science) Six strong LORs (four from research mentors, one from dept. chair, one from a guy I worked for), three years research experience, two summer internships in foreign laboratories funded by fellowships, Goldwater Scholar, one publication and one submitted abstract, a bunch of leadership experience.
