iceleung Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 I have got admission at civil& environmental engineering at CMU, but this program is lasting for only one-year. I was wondering whether it is worthy to take this degree, because it seems not that regular compared with counterparts at other top universities. if i want to pursue a Ph.d program, what should i do? thank you! p.s. i have deferred this admission and hesitating whether should i go to CMU.
spectralScatter Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 I have no idea how you can finish an entire thesis in a year. doesn't seem like the best idea.
belowthree Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 I have no idea how you can finish an entire thesis in a year. doesn't seem like the best idea. Answer: It's a watered down master's thesis. Then it's easy and doable. Welcome to some master's programs.
noojens Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 MEng programs are typically project-based rather than thesis-based. They are generally regarded as preparation for work in industry, although if you enter the program knowing you want to do a PhD you can perhaps tailor your coursework and project to position yourself for doctorate admissions. MEng degrees are also typically self-funded, whereas 2-year MS programs are more generous with funding.
was1984 Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I would go somewhere that you can get faculty support for an M.S. degree and a thesis if you are planning on a Ph.D. Those 1 year M.S. or M.Eng. programs tend to be very focused on coursework and have little to no research component. Because of that they aren't a great preparation for a Ph.D. program. That's not to say those programs aren't excellent choices if you are planning on a terminal degree. I know with my previous employer's salaries went up about 10k if you have a masters degree with equivalent experience, not to mention the additional marketability.
noojens Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 Yeah a 1 year MEng degree is great for your career prospects and earning power. A 2 year MS is better PhD preparation.
