wishingforPHD
I know this is probably a stupid question, but I am wondering how PhD students should dress, especially in the beginning of the semester and orientation period. I did complete my MA, and dress was casual, but for some reason this seems more official, and I don't want to show up on the first day in jeans if everyone is business casual. Any advice would be appreciated.
timuralp
I wear shorts on regular basis, well, until winter comes and I wore them even for meetings with my advisor, since the first day.
jasper.milvain
I'd go with grey/black pants, a low-key skirt, or nice dark jeans if you want to dress up a little. Adding a pretty cardigan, wrap, or scarf to your usual uniform usually works, too. I think the thing is dressing up without looking like you're putting on a costume. Keep what you feel comfortable in and just tweak it a little bit. Otherwise, you can look like you're trying too hard.
Minnesotan
I wear shorts and a t-shirt, unless I have a big meeting. That's about as dressed up as most English instructors get.
Stories
I've been working with faculty as a RA the past week. I've worn t-shirts and shorts. Summer is super casual. Wear what's comfortable.
frankdux
i plan on wearing shorts, sandals, and a tasteful t-shirt at all times, unless there's some sort of special event that requires a nicer appearance.
