So I checked one of my applications today and it told me that my status was "Return to Department". I called the Graduate School and they told me that they required an official transcript (although the department did not unless I accepted my offer) in order to make sure I met Graduate School requirements. What do you think the odds are that the department has accepted me and the Graduate School just requires this transcript in order to ensure my acceptance? Why would they need it if they were going to deny me admission? Has anyone else experienced this and have anything to add?

I think it's probably a good sign, as you said. If they don't want you anyway, why would they care? Good luck.

It also just might be the case that either the department or graduate school refuse to recognise the unofficial copy of your transcript as valid (for whatever reason), and want to work directly from the official copy.

I've had one school require an official transcript from one of my past institutions since they didn't like the look of the PDF-generated version (whatever that means). They had no issue with my other unofficial transcript though. All of my unofficial transcripts were from local, well-known universities, so they would have encountered them in the past.

That being said, hopefully it is just the admission process is a little out-of-sync and you have an acceptance en route; good luck!
