Heimat Historian Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 I already posted this on the history sight, but is it within the realm of possibilities that someone could ask the graduate department for funding for the summer prior to entrance in the program to take an intensive language course? I've already missed the FLAS deadline for this summer but the language institute would be a great help to my studies. Just a thought.
grad_wannabe Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 This is a good question. I need to pick up a second language during my doctorate, it would be nice if the program picked up the tab for summer classes.
Shiji E. Moji Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 (edited) I think it varies, inevitably, with departments and programs. I know that for language programs, remedial language summer classes are offered if you aren't up to snuff. Whether or not that's paid for is also a little iffy, depending on school/funding availability/program. If I were you, I'd ask your department directly on the likelihood of a fully covered summer language course. Either way, I hope it works out for you! Good luck! [Edit: I forgot to mention that there are a number of universities abroad that offer summer intensive courses to graduate students. I suggest looking into that, too.] Edited February 25, 2015 by Shiji E. Moji
kotov Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 You could try to justify it as research funding and get some support either from your department or from your academic division that way, but I'm not sure if it would work, especially before you started the program. I used Title VIII to fund my intensive language courses, but that was for Romanian and I don't know if your intended language falls under Title VIII or not.
