beibao Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I went to a pretty good UC for undergrad but graduated with a pretty low GPA. (Overall 3.0 Math 3.2) My GRE scores were V157 and Q162 and a 5 on the Essay. I've applied for the Masters Programs in Applied Math at UCLA, UCI, UCSB, UCSD, and the Cal States (CSULB, CSULA, CSUF, CSUN) I didn't get any recommendations, were my applications too much of a reach? Thanks!
MathCat Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 When you say you didn't get any recommendations, do you mean letters of recommendation from professors, or you didn't get recommended for admission anywhere? The first is extremely bad - they are required for applications! If the latter, I'd say the main thing holding you back is your GPA. UCLA and UCSD are probably completely out of reach unless you can improve that somehow, or have something else very strong about your application (fantastic LORs, research experience, something like that). I'm not sure about the rest. You might like to read the "sub 3.0 GPAs acceptance thread" It's not math specific, and you're GPA isn't actually sub 3.0, but there's lots of stories in there of how people overcame their GPA and got into a good program. Good luck.
