Anyone else considering NYU? I think it's at the top of my list because of the number of training programs available

I am! Which program did you interview for? Also do you happen to know if we are able to TA if we want to? I know it is not required but I want to try teaching.

I interviewed for Pathobio, but I am also interested in Molecular Pharm, CMB, and Neuro. I don't have any idea about the TA situation

I don't remember if you get extra compensation for doing so, but Sackler students do have the opportunity to TA if they're interested. That was one of my concerns interviewing as well:)

Another question: If you are seriously considering a different track from which you interviewed with should you take coursework for the track you might want to switch to? I really want to take the bioinformatics I class they offer because I have programming experince and feel like the other intro class they offer would be things I have already learned.

 

I might want also want to switch to bioinformatics, but I am still unsure.... Idk if they would be strict about switching to this track since it is more computational than all of the other tracks and would require different skills.

Hi,

 

I currently go to NYU Sackler. TA is not required but there is the opportunity to teach and you get compensated (not sure how much). Also, I think you have to take a bioinformatics or stats class anyway (as least for my track), so you technically get to try that track out already. They are not strict about students sticking to a track in the beginning, you can get into any track you are interested in. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Does anyone know how the waitlist works at Sackler? I was told I would be updated on my status in early April, but have yet to hear anything. Has anyone else been waitlisted, but then accepted?

Hey guys! So glad I found this thread! What do you think my chances are of getting into Cornell and NYU Sackler with these to boost my application: 2 years of research in proteomics and neurobio labs, each for about a year, GRE 320, GRE Biochem 670, GPA 3.71

I am worried about my GPA mostly :/ I have a good relationship with most my mentors so I know I will have good rec. letters

 

Also what kind of GPAs / GRE scores did you guys have? I would appreciate all input! Thanks so much!

Honestly, your GPA is fine (3.7 - 4.0 is pretty typical). As long as you show a nice positive trend and you take a good number of advanced electives and do well (B+/A) - the AdComms should view your profile positively.

I agree. I definitely think stats-wise, you're in a good range, so I'd focus on keeping up your grades and polishing up the rest of your application!

Thank you both! I am honestly ignoring the fact that I'm not US citizen due to the fact that I am from a tiny country and see it as an advantage to boost their diversity profile(or whatever). Should I be thinking like this tho? I mean they are private institutions and I went to a US State Uni so I feel fine. 

 

One more question tho, what do you mean by advanced electives? If you mean things like Physical Chemistry or lots of Math I don't have that :s I do have upper level Immunology, Biochem, Virology and other courses of the more bio-sort though.

Those should suffice
