To my dismay I was rejected from Columbia's PhD Counseling Psych program but was accepted for their Master's program even though I did not interview. Does everyone get accepted into the Master's?

How does funding work for Master's programs? I thought they didn't offer any type of funding but I saw on the results page someone say that they were offered a $17k scholarship. Where does one get one of those?!? I applied for one scholarship but I haven't heard anything about it.

I am not too sure about the money situation for masters students. I am aware, however, that TC does accept a large amount of its PHD applicant pool into the Masters Program (this is how they can fund the Phd students).

You mean they first accept their PhD applicants into Master's and then place them into their PhD program?

Not at all. lol They take applicants to the PhD and place them in the master programs as they may be more qualified than the master's applicants. I have actually heard that doing an internal transfer from Masters to Phd in the program is quite difficult actually.

I see. It's very weird to be given acceptance without even interviewing seems like they're just trying to get money. makes me question if there is value to their EdM degree at all. Would it make me more competitive later on when applying to PhD programs?

Is the master's their money machine, more so than not. That, however, does not automatically mean it would not help make you more competitive later. That's a decision that you'll have to thoroughly think through.

This thread helped me confirm that I will not be accepting my offer. The same thing happened to me, and I received that same $17k scholarship. I heard bad things about the program but didn't want to believe it. Thank goodness I still have my UK schools. They like me! They really like me! ;)

Really? What kind of bad things? I don't know much about them, especially since I had my mind set on the PhD and not Master's. It's all weird how they accept people without interview and everyone gets offered the $17k scholarship. I want to know more about it from people that are actually in the program.

Basically that the master's program is just a degree mill, not very individualized, etc. etc. I don't know how true that is, but I've called admissions to ask a few questions, and even then, they were not very helpful. Usually, if a student is accepted to a program, a school is all about being as helpful and accommodating as possible. However, I wouldn't rely on things said on the internet. Like you mentioned, try to seek out a current student and do your own research. Who knows? This could be a great alternative.

Again, it is a degree from Columbia. No one can knock that. You should be very proud that you were accepted, even if it's the masters program! I know I am. How many people can say they've been accepted into an Ivy League school?

Has anyone heard from Columbia TC in their masters for developmental psych? I haven't heard anything yet and the wait is killing me!

It seems that everyone that was rejected from PhD just automatically got in to the master's program. Everything about this seems very odd. How can an ivy league school accept just anyone? Is it all just to make money?

Has anyone heard from TC about their school psych program? I've already accepted an offer at another school, but would still like an answer. It's been forever since the interview.
