sadegh_cpu Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Hello everyone. I am Sadegh from Iran. I am interested in Computer Graphics and programming in Opengl and Directx but i don't have much practical experience in them. by the way,I saw this program at Link
joro Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 IPAX from Sony is not a company, but a collection of schools that fulfill certain requirements to be part of IPAX. So you want to get into computer graphics, but you know nothing about what you want to do. Sounds like you just want to learn how to program computer graphics using opengl. What exactly are you looking to do for work in computer graphics? There are different industries out there for computer graphics. As far as further academic study, it all depends on the person and what they want to do. I don't think you've really thought this through enough. Do you want a specialized or directed degree to get you into specific positions? Do you want to do research? If you understand and get back to me with some answers, then I can probably direct you to other programs out there.
sadegh_cpu Posted August 27, 2009 Author Posted August 27, 2009 thanks for your answer I know enough about computer graphics, even i made some amateur games with it,but i am not a specialist in it.Also i am just at the beginning level of working with Opengl. My knowledge in computer graphics is good in theory but i didn't have much practical works. And about job,I don't know much about jobs in this branch but now i am investigating about it.i personally like to work in game industry.also i wonder if it is a good choice? and if you want to direct me for another program,i personally don't like programing, that is my problem.now i am studying other fields of computer science in more deeper level but i think what i like is computer graphics.what other programs you suggest me which help me in both getting PHD and find a proper job. Also i have much time to study and read now ....
joro Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 Your knowledge plus a bit of reading should be enough to get you an entry level job as a programmer in the video game industry. But you said you don't like programming, so I think that's out of the question then. If you want to work in video games, then check out gamedev.net and gamasutra.com to learn more about the industry. Also working in the video game industry doesn't really require you to have a PhD. There may be a few jobs, but it's far too few to even consider it in my opinion.
belowthree Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 The game industry is hardly my specialty but usually doesn't require beyond an BS or maybe an MS. Almost all of the ground-level creative positions are programming positions or artist positions. I think it would help greatly if you elaborated on exactly what role you saw for yourself in this industry given you don't like programming... I also think you'd be fairly hard-pressed to find a computer science program that would accept you without decent programming skills. I mean I guess there's some theory folks, but it would be an oddity and you would need to be looking at a well-defined role. Which is something you seem to lack.
sadegh_cpu Posted August 28, 2009 Author Posted August 28, 2009 thanks dear joro and below three for your answers. I hardly can tell you how much you helped me in this way. I found out this program not proper for myself,as it is not needed for entering game industry, while there are not many programs like this in europe, i think it is better to choose another program then. I dont like programming overally, but i realy like programming that involeved with images and pictures. also i forgot to tell you i did some programing in prolog and it was a good experience for me. would you please tell me what is the best program for me to apply?i think you know me well now and i am looking forward to hear your answer so i can concentrate on what you suggest and want to study as much as it possible on that field what can i give you as reward?you are so kind and helpful bye
joro Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 If you're still trying to go to grad school for this, then if funds aren't an issue then check out specialty schools. I don't know many off the top of my head aside from the following US schools: DigiPen, Full Sail, Ringling, SCAD, Academy of Art, and ETC at CMU. I will say that the programs at these schools are specialized, but are very expensive. The program at CMU is about $50k a year. Don't expect any kind of funding from any of the schools I've listed too. This site contains a list of schools too: http://www.gamecareerguide.com/digital_counselor/ If you enjoyed prolog, then maybe look into programming AI in video games instead.
belowthree Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 There seems to be two types of programs that help prepare people for a career in the computer game industry. One type of program is a computer science department/school that offers a specialized game design program. Another type of program is an art school that offers a specialized program in game design. These two types of programs, while both being targeted towards the game industry, come at things from a very different way. The first tries to nurture talented game programmers while the second tries to nurture talented game artists. I'm not sure which type of program would be better for you. It might be worth it to call up a recruiter at a game company you'd be interested in working for and talk to them about what types of positions they might have for a person of your skills. Then figure out which type of program would be more appropriate.

I dont wan t to expend that much on schools or uni you mentioned but i am much interested in AI in video games , which master program you suggest me to study?(AI is a proper choice?) in addition I consider Sweden as my first choice and the best universities in Sweden are KTH and Chalmers, would please take a look at these programs and tell me which match with my interest more?(I couldn't find a proper one between them while the only program that match my interest between these lists is Medical Imaging which in KTH which i think more related to physics than computer and programming,is it true?) http://www.kth.se/studies/master/programmes?l=en_UK http://www.chalmers.se/en/sections/educ ... programmes
js911 Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 I would get a normal bachelor of science in CS and then learn the game programming on your free time. If you're interested in 3D graphics, you should also start learning that by yourself. You can't rely on your university to provide you with a specialized education.

This seems like reasonable advice and matches the trajectory I've seen most people enter the game industry.
sadegh_cpu Posted August 29, 2009 Author Posted August 29, 2009 Considering all of your advices,I think it is just to early to decide which branch of computer science to enter for work purposes,so lets put game industry aside because now i know much about it with the aid of you.I mean i want to concentrate more on education in any field than work experience in game industry (and I appreciate your helps in previous posts about it) In addition I consider Sweden as my first choice and the best universities in Sweden are KTH and Chalmers(?),would please take a look at these programs and tell me which match with my interest more? http://www.kth.se/studies/master/programmes?l=en_UK http://www.chalmers.se/en/sections/educ ... programmes my criteria are : -highest chance of getting PHD degree -chance of getting a good job in Europe -less involving with programming
sadegh_cpu Posted September 7, 2009 Author Posted September 7, 2009 after a short period research on program descriptions on above links (KTH&Chalmers Uni) I found this two programs much better than "Advanced Computer Graphics",now i wonder what is your idea about these programs ,(pls comment, just a simple word will help me much more than u may imagine),I would like to know about job opportunities and chance of continue study at PHD level(better in USA),here u r: KTH-Interactive Systems Engineering : http://www.kth.se/studies/master/programmes/it/2.1591?l=en_UK Chalmers-Interaction Design : http://www.chalmers.se/en/sections/education/masterprogrammes/programme-descriptions/interaction-design
joro Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I know we've given you a bunch of advice, but I really do suggest that you contact advisors from those schools. Tell them who you are, what you want, and ask if their program would make a good fit to achieve your goals.

Tell them who you are, what you want, and ask if their program would make a good fit to achieve your goals. thanks for your advice, first of all what what is the best way of contacting advisers?(via email or tel contact). then i wonder if i ask about job opportunities and education quality, they would give me a honest advice.I mean isn't it better to ask this sort of questions from a person who is not beneficiary in uni?also I think it is not possible to ask them many questions like which uni is the best.Anyway I will contact with them and announce the result here, but I want to know your ideas here about this two programs ,i still have doubt about chance of getting PHD after master program.
