risapiecees Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 So, I took the GRE earlier this week, and I got a 730q, 640v, not sure on my AWA score yet. I am applying to PhD programs in Sociology (my first choice is Northwestern, where the averages for students accepted to the program are 720q, 680v). Should I retake to try to bring up my verbal score? I studied a lot more for the quantitative section than for the verbal, because it had been so long since I have done the sort of math found on the GRE, so I think that I could learn a lot more vocab words than I did before taking the test this week. Is it worth it to retake the test? I am leaving the country in early October, so I would only have about a month to study before retaking. Any suggestions?
manhattanbusmap Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 where are you going? you can take the GRE abroad...that said, it sounds like your scores are fine. i'm not sure how it works in the social sciences, but in the humanities the GRE seems to be weighed very lightly...
rainy_day Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 There is nothing wrong with those GRE scores. You are right in line with the average you are aiming for. This process is extremely stressful; do not create more anxiety for yourself.
