mluck Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Hi all, I'm applying for 2010 and feel pretty well prepared in most aspects (resume, GRE, undergrad gpa, etc.), but the part of each application that makes me nervous is the "publications" section. As a 23 year old (without a graduate degree) working in the contemporary art world, what journal exactly would publish my work? Where are all these prodigy 20-somethings publishing unless they are writing say, critical reviews? Other than some work as a research assistant in college which yielded a few "thank you"s and footnotes, I have no bibliography. Those of you who have a bit more insight, or have gone through the application process before: do you feel that this is very important/ influential to admission? If that's the case, does anyone have any recommendations for moving forward? Any advice is appreciated; thanks so much!
purplepepper Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 I had zero publications and got into some pretty top schools. Actually that's not true, I had a one page lecture review in a monthly newsletter. I don't know who these genius 20 somethings are or where they publish either....but obviously my lack of publications didn't hurt me. Your LORs will be more important than any of it, followed by your SOP.
lizart Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 Unless other undergrads are vastly different, the only thing I figure applicants will have is university sponsored publications. I have a couple catalog entries through school and a paper in the college historical review, but that's it. I surely hope everyone else is in the same boat!
fullofpink Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 I am one of those undergrads who have published. I co-authored an article with one of my professors who insisted that my name be first in credit. This professor is also hooking me up with a symposium presentation and hopefully a second one next semester. He also helped me obtain a research grant which will enable me to self-publish my own catalog. Sometimes it isn't what you know but who
