Cornell vs Ohio State

PhD in Mech Eng, focus in micro fluidics.

did under grad at Ohio state,

 

pro of ohio state: I like the professor, and know that he's there to make me a good PhD student, not to do his research.

 

Pro of Cornell: Something new, good reputation, reputation helps in academia,.

 

Cons of Ohio state: 9 years at the same place could cause burnout.

 

Cons of Cornell: it's in the middle of nowhere, and very isolated.

 

Any input you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Cornell. Go somewhere new.

Cornell for sure. Going to a new place will broaden your horizons and expand your network, and you already know the Ohio profs so you can stay in touch and get guidance from them either way. If you want to go into academia eventually (or keep the option open at least) it will be helpful to have degrees from different places, and to have your highest degree be from a prestigious institution. Also don't discount the resources wealthy private schools have that can give you an edge - for example more money for conferences, etc.

Go for Cornell. It's best to build your network and get out of your comfort zone. Two degrees (BS to MS or MS to PhD) from one place isn't so bad, but going BS to PhD won't really help you grow professionally. You'll always have your OSU professors in your network.
