WebbsInferno Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Interested in doing a PhD. How do you go about reaching out to a potential PI when you are just interested BEFORE applying? What types of things do you ask? Thanks guy!
serenade Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Flatter them by expressing your interest in their recent book/article. Briefly describe what kind of research you would be interested in pursuing, and how your interests overlap with their work, i.e., why they would be a good fit. And then ask if they are taking on students for the semester you would be beginning. If you don't hear back in a week, email them again. If you don't hear back the second time, drop it. Good luck!
random_grad Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 in addition to the advice above: talk to your LoR writers about a potential PI and maybe your prof will tell you to mention them in your email or even offer to talk to the PI directly. This would help with your chances of getting a response. serenade 1
have2thinkboutit Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Exactly what serenade was saying. The only thing I wanna add - keep it short! As short as possible really, so that it can be read within less than a minute.
