rlattin Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Hey guys, I'm interested in a M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies. I want one that will allow me an easy transition into government agencies or Think tanks. Does anyone know which are the top schools for this, also does anyone know where I can find a list of the top programs in general? What does it take to get into these places, I graduated Cum Laude from the University of Arizona's Near Eastern Studies Program, speak Hebrew, am working on Arabic, and lived in Israel for a year. Hope someone can shed some light on some of this stuff. Thanks.
KieBelle Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 NYU - MA in Near Eastern Studies University of Washington - MA in International Studies, Middle East Studies Georgetown U - MA in Arab Studies Univ of Michigan Ann Arbor - AM in Modern Middle Eastern and North African Studies Indiana Univ Bloomington - MA in Near Eastern Studies University of Chicago - MA in Middle Easern Studies I believe Columbia, Harvard, and UC Berkeley also have programs on Near Eastern or Middle Eastern Studies. Avoid Univ of Texas Austin because although they have a MES program, it's geared toward those wanting to go into business. Your stats sound very good, but don't rely on stats alone. Make sure your LOR and SOP (and any writing sample, if it's required) are very well done.
Aubstopper Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 rlattin, I too was in your place last year...I'm currently in UChicago's MA in Middle Eastern Studies. I agree with KieBelle's list of top MA programs. She forgot, however, John Hopkins SAIS which also has a Middle Eastern Studies concentration (and is amongst the top), and George Washington's M.E. Studies MA. If you're looking for purely political science and something that will prepare you for govt career, i'd suggest one of the DC schools for the obvious reason that you'll be given more opportunities for internships, etc. If you're looking for a good history, religion and language background then Harvard, UChicago, or UMichigan...though UChicago CMES does have a duel program with the Harris School for ME Studies/Public Policy MAs. Oh and UChicago is pretty good with funding also, if that's a factor in your decision. (they gave me a half tuition scholarship and i will probably get a full scholarship the following year). If you need any help or pointers just IM me :-)
