Hi all,

I'm new here and just wanted some thoughts about what to do with my life. I've been accepted to a few [very different] public/global health programs. They are the following:

Emory MPH - Global Health
UofT MPH - Health Promotion (with $5000 scholarship)
LSE MSc - Global Health (1 year)

I've also applied to LSHTM for MSc Public Health (applied very recently and very late in the game, but I also applied to LSE around the same time and got a response back within two week).

My ultimate goal is to combine clinical expertise and public health practice at the community level, servicing vulnerable people and promoting equity of access. I have a particular interest in developing countries. I hope to be applying to medical school in the near future. The 1 year program would be ideal for applying this year. Although I hope to pursue medical school sooner rather than later, I am willing to fulfill a two years masters if needed.

Any insights on reputation, career prospects, costs, whatever is appreciated. Thanks!

Do you really need a MPH now for your career goals or is it something you could do part-time while in med school? I guess I'm just wondering how much of a difference having the MPH before med school will ultimately make since it sounds like you'll have to take out loans to do the degree.

I'd choose the program that gives you the most analytical skills when you graduate. Future schools/employers will be very interested in those MPH graduates who had tangible skills in data analysis.

It's also critical to select a program that minimizes the financial burden. If you can find a school that balances analytical training and cost effectiveness - I'd go with that one.

Thanks for your input! They're all definitely great points.

I figured that a background in public/global health is something that I will want to have anyways down the line, whenever I do end up practicing medicine. So given that I have this year to really do whatever I want, it felt like a good time to pursue a masters. I will have to take out some loans, but I'm also quite fortunate that my parents and family has set aside enough money for my future academic pursuits. I've personally also saved up money to help cover costs. I don't want to say money is NOT an issue, because it is definitely important to consider (especially if I want to pursue medicine afterward$) but I think I'm trying to narrow down based on practicality and overall experience first and foremost.

Thank you!
