Are those all the schools you applied to? They are really competitive schools, if you're going to be rejected, those are the ones to be rejected from!
FastForward Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Thanks for cheering me up LaraAnn. I indeed vastly underestimated the competition and thought my enthusiasm would compensate for the missing dimensions in my application (which is my lack of lab work). I don't even have an undergrad degree in psychology... dunno what I was thinking when I applied, but I think I was carried away by the laudatory comments of friends & family. I feel like an idiot... That said, I hope to quit my job after 4 years and go work at a lab starting this fall. Do you folks think it would be enough to have ~6 months lab work experience by the time they read my application next year ? Or should I aim for longer ?
astorian Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 WUSTL has finally sent me their rejection. Boo. This was my top choice! FastForward- sorry to hear you're in the same boat. I have more that 5 years of research experience and a masters in psychology, and thought my GRE/GPA scores were certainly up to par for NYU, but still not even an interview. I'm sure research experience will help your applications if you reapply, but like everyone on this site says, you can never really be sure . Good luck! This sucks.
astorian Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 I just heard from CUNY's Cognition, Brain, & Behavior program, they are having an open house on March 28th. Anyone else here going?
FastForward Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 results update - Stanford finally sent the rejection letter. Was my first choice and had a warm fuzzy feeling when I submitted the app. Darn it. NYU - insisting on not re-mailing the decision letter again (first one got lost). No phone or email decision allowed. *If there are any grad students who work at a lab with a job opening, please let me know.* Redefining disappointment, FF
astorian Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Columbia? Hello, Columbia? Anyone heard from them? Good grief, if they've rejected me, I just want to know so that I can get on with figuring out what school to go to! Thanks all!
LaraAnn85 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Columbia? Hello, Columbia? Anyone heard from them? Good grief, if they've rejected me, I just want to know so that I can get on with figuring out what school to go to! Thanks all! Have you not heard a word from them? Not to be a downer but I wouldn't take that as a good sign. I've pretty much written off the program that I haven't heard from. I still haven't made a decision, but at least I know what I'm choosing from!
FastForward Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I also have no response from Columbia.. social cog neuroscience lab sounds so wonderful, but I don't have my hopes up.
astorian Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Yeah, I figure it's a rejection, I just wish they'd go ahead and tell me! I'm fairly sure they had interviews, and can't imagine that I've been accepted without an interview. It's ok, I have some good options, but would really like to know for sure what they all are before I go ahead and accept somewhere. Why do schools wait to reject? It seems silly that they hold on to rejection letters so long

It seems silly that they hold on to rejection letters so long I'm planning to contact my 4 probably-wait-listed schools before I officially accept, just to make sure they aren't going to contact me on April 14th (or later?) or something. I want to make a completely informed decision and they should know by then what the deal is.
astorian Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Ha indeed. Looks like Fordham (Educational Psychology) or CUNY (Cognition, Brain, & Behavior- interview next week) for me! Where is everyone else going?
LaraAnn85 Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Ha indeed. Looks like Fordham (Educational Psychology) or CUNY (Cognition, Brain, & Behavior- interview next week) for me! Where is everyone else going? Congrats! I wish I knew...Purdue, IUPUI, Arizona, or Houston. Assuming my two wait lists don't come through.... :?:
FastForward Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Following my rejection from Harvard (yesterday) and my hopelessness for NYU and Columbia, I think I am the proud father of a 0/7. It was great to meet all of you (special thanks for the guidance LaraAnn).. I will prob be here next year again, hanging out with the new applicant bunch cheers.
astorian Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 No reply from NYU yet, FastForward? I got my rejection last week. The envelope wasn't even sealed (maybe so snooping neighbors could experience my rejection with me?). Still no word from Columbia though. Sigh, those were my top two choices. Good luck next year!
FastForward Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 I am sure there is a decision made by NYU but I just don't have the letter and they refuse to disclose it over the phone. If int'l mail works fast, I think I will know next week... but I know they also had an interview round, so I am sure I am not getting it.
Dopamine Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Columbia had two interview/recruitment weekends in February. I went to the first one. I think they brought in around 20 people in total. I'm not going there so my spot is open...if you haven't heard back perhaps you're on the wait list. This late I can't imagine they haven't contacted you if you were going to be rejected, who did you want to work with there?
astorian Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 I had been hoping to work with Dr. Krauss or Dr. Metcalfe at Columbia, though there are quite a few that I'd be happy to work with. I believe they are on spring break this week, so hopefully I'll hear by next week. Do you know if they plan to have another interview day for wait-listers? I won't keep my hopes up Fastforward- I didn't realize you are international, then I guess you should be hearing from NYU any day now. I'm in New York, so of course it didn't take long to find me. I think it was last Monday, so hopefully you'll hear soon. Anyone planning to attend the open house at CUNY Brooklyn College for the Cognition, Brain, & Behavior program next Friday?
LaraAnn85 Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Do you know if they plan to have another interview day for wait-listers? I was wondering about this in general- do schools do this? I'm on two wait lists, are they going to ask to meet me if they want me? Or do they just take people sight unseen when it gets this late? What if they don't know until April 15th that they still have room for a student? This is all craziness, they should have a match system!
FastForward Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 I was rooting for Ochsner, Shohamy and Wager at Columbia. At this point, even being on the waitlist (and not getting in) would be an honor -astorian- Yup, I live in NY but I was made to travel for work... The mail system here is a not the fastest. Will post when I find out. I wonder who will be the last to reject me
astorian Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 Hi! I know this is an exhausted point already, but has anyone heard from Columbia yet? I have heard from all of my other schools, and am ready to make my decision. Columbia was the first application due, and by far the last to respond.

I have heard from all of my other schools, and am ready to make my decision. Columbia was the first application due, and by far the last to respond. Call them!! I called one of my wait lists yesterday and they were like "oh i'm so sorry we didn't let you know, we have all of our acceptances in so please go ahead and make your decision."
astorian Posted April 2, 2008 Posted April 2, 2008 A HA! They have denied me. It's cool, I'm happy to be moving on with making my decision. Must have been a tough year, I thought I was pretty well qualified, at least to get an interview! But you never know. Accepted to Fordham and Teachers College Rejected from NYU and Columbia Interviewed and waiting at CUNY Brooklyn College. Hope everyone had a successful application process!

So where are you going to end up? I take it you're from the East Coast! I think I'm headed to ASU....hurray for more sunshine 8)
FastForward Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 In the end, I got my apps to NYU passed on to the MA program as well. I hope I get an answer in a month. All in all, I am back to where I started minus $1,000 spent on apps and GRE plus better set expectations. I will try to volunteer at lab starting in august (in NY) so if you got anything, lemme know. cheers
