tourist
I just got a 1310. 660V and 650Q. How does this fare for history PhD programs, European history to be exact? I understand GRE scores aren't imperative for admissions into history programs, but I just wanted a second opinion. Also, I have no intention of retaking. The deed has been done, and I actually exceeded my target score (1300, even though I would have preferred 700V and 600Q). Just looking for some input from the seasoned pros out there. Any is welcome. Thanks.
kahlan_amnell
That's a decent score. Mostly GRE scores can keep you out, they don't get you in. That score shouldn't keep you out.
blukorea
I also think that's a decent score. One often needs a 700+ to impress top programs. I got in to a very good program with 650 verbal, but I did have a 800 quant.
tourist
Thanks for the responses, guys. I, too, hope that's a decent score. I only wish I would've gotten a higher score on Verbal, as on practice exams I got as high as mid 700s, and I'm an English teacher, for God's sake. Anyway, I'm happy to have scored the highest on Math on the real thing. I'm hoping my other credentials will get me in. I'm trying for an Eastern European history PhD, with a major focus on Romania in the 20th century. I have research experience at the Romanian archives, a High Honors Thesis, stellar recommendations, and a very good GPA (3.86, 3.97 in history, to boot) . I didn't want my GRE score to be an impediment, and it seems (I hope, once again), that it won't be. And yes, like many others, I'm targeting top programs and wishing that at least one will bite. Now, the question is, will they? Maybe my score will show them that I am balanced...
tourist
By the way, I realized that my last post made me look like I'm full of myself. I am not, at all. I just want to cling on to some positives that will make me somewhat hopeful of the upcoming admissions 'ordeal.' We applicants probably all need something positive, right? TMP
There you go. That's all you need to focus on in your admissions package.
