Hey everyone,

So I've wanted to apply for a PhD for some time now and I'm just getting in the process of thinking about it (I know, I am so late, I KNOW) but when it comes to the GRE does anyone have any advice on how long it'll take to study?

This depends a ton on what your target goals are and where you are currently at. I think it would be a really good idea to take a practice exam now (you can find practice exams for free all over the internet, and also from the ETS* website, or you can purchase them from GRE prep companies) and see what you would score if you took it right now. For some people, only a few hours of studying is needed to get to where they want (usually just to get used to the test format and understanding what ETS wants from you!). For others, months of studying is required. Sorry that there is no clear answer, but so much of it depends on each person!

No but that is massively helpful in itself. I do appreciate it! It has helped me plan some method of attack.

Hello,

I, too, am wanting to take the GRE sooner than later. My goal is to be admitted to a MPH program in Fall 2016. I've taken the GRE before but did not do well and I think this was because of how I studied for it. I'm actually interested in having a study buddy so let me know if you'd be interested in studying together!

Hi ClaireK,

If you have an idea of which Program(s) you plan to apply to, then you can do some research and get a better sense of the 'level' of GRE Score that you would need to be considered a competitive applicant. Some Schools list that type of 'data' on their respective websites (in the form of average GRE Scores for incoming classes, the median score or some other data point). If you can't find that information in that way, then you can also reach out to the Program directly to ask your questions.

Many Test Takers spend upwards of 3 months (or more) on their studies, but the length of time that YOU require could vary. To get a sense of your current skills, you should plan to take a FULL-LENGTH MST (you can download 2 for free from www.gre.org). Once you have that set of scores, you should report back here and we can talk through your study plan.

Do you know the application deadline(s) for the Program(s) that you're considering?
