Australian Universities for Speech

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, i recently got accepted to all the aussie schools that i have applied and are looking to see if anybody here has applied or accepted any offer. I got accepted to University of Sydney, Flinders University as well as Curtin University. I am still deciding where to go but will most likely accept Flinders offer. Thanks!

Well I'm an international student to begin with and Australia is closer to home. Also the programs in Australia is automatically recognised in my country while certifications from the us requires me to do a conversion test. So I guess Aussie is my best bet

Hi Curly_girl,

I received the interview notification on Tuesday and was scheduled for interview on Thursday and got accepted the very next day.

I actually applied in July so don't you worry about it they will take some time to respond.

That's good to know, but annoying. I had emailed Flinders over the summer and asked if it is better to apply earlier rather than later and was told it doesn't matter.I waited to so that I would get my last semester's grades in. If I remember correctly, they only interview a small number of applicants. I am hoping that I am waiting on an invitation notification and not a rejection. Did you get an email? Or did you find out via the application portal?

Congrats once again on your acceptances! I have heard great things of both Flinders and the University of Sydney (and never looked into Curtin). Maybe I will see you in Adelaide next year!

Hi there,

I think they already decided on who to interview but I think they are doing in waves. So the initial wave of people are probably the ones that are highly ranked based on their requirements. That being said, don't worry too much. I am just speculating and don't really know how it actually works.

For the interview I received an email from them.

Hey Congrats!!!

Just make sure you know the program really well. Its kind of like regurgitating your personal statement all over again. I don't know if you have done interviews for the slp programs in the us, it's very similar.

They  are super nice and so don't be too stressed up! Honestly my interview was at 730am and so I just made sure I wore a presentable shirt and shorts. They cant see my shorts anyway Haha.

Anyway I saw that you got accepted in the USA. Are you still considering Australia?

Good luck!

Thank you.

I am still considering Australia, but I don't know if I will be able to study abroad for practical reasons. I have lived abroad before, and I feel like this is one of my last chances. Australia appeals to the adventurer in me,  but it would be easier and (probably) cheaper to go to school in the US. I am hoping that the interview will clear some stuff up for me (assuming I even get in).

Hey Persis,

I got accepted to U syd as well but gave that up because it was too expensive. The tuition is going to increase about 10% every day. I counted all the cost and it's more expensive than studying in the Us. Not only that because it's in the city the housing is crazily expensive. Plus I heard the lidcombe area is a little shady. So I'm really relieved that I got in Flinders haja

I just had my interview with Flinders! The interview really makes me like the program, and makes me want to attend. I think the interview went well, and I hope I get in. They told me that they are making decisions shortly, but because of the international office it could be up to three weeks until I hear back! I hope that I hear back tomorrow like you did.

Did they give you any information on employment statistics. I asked in the interview, but they talked more generally about requirements in the US and transferring info, and how I could work in a slew of other countries.  The way they described the program and problem based learning seems so much better suited to how I learn than US programs, but I don't want to go if I can't get a job. I wouldn't mind working in Australia or another country either for a couple years, but I want to make sure it is a viable option for me.

Hi Curly_girl,

Based on what ive heard and know there's mutual agreement with asha and their Australian counterpart and so finding a job back in the us might not be a problem. However, getting certification in the us based on an Aussie certification is a pain like all paperwork are.

For employment, I didn't really ask as getting a job isn't much a concerned for me as flinders program is pretty well known in my country and so I will probably get a job.  Sorry wasn't much of a help here.

I hope you get in and we can be classmates!

Thanks speechie 92!

I think I may have some with the paperwork, but I know it would be much easier if I have already worked for a year before moving back to the US. I also wouldn't mind staying abroad after I graduate, but I have heard that SLP salaries in Australia are significantly lower than in the US. Although I also wouldn't mind working in any of the countries Australia has mutual agreements with.

Feel free not to answer, but are you from Singapore or South Africa? During my interview they mentioned mutual agreements with those two countries (among others) and I know that ASHA does not have agreements with those countries.

I am glad that Flinders has a good international reputation. Based on rankings, I thought it probably has a very good reputation, but it is nice to have that confirmed!

Hi Curly_girl,

Yes! I'm from one of those countries! And working there upon graduation isn't much of a problem. As mentioned asha doesn't have mutual agreement with any of those countries and so if you have your cccs, there's still a need for you to take their placement test. For my country, you can only take them twice. With an aussie degree, I can be an slp straight!

If money isnt a problem for you, I think you should try an Aussie uni! In that way you can travel around the world and be an slp with lesser worries!  Then  it will also be easy to go back home and practice as an slp as well!

Money is a bit of a problem, but luckily the dollar is very strong right now and I could get US federal aid. Basically, if I get in (up to 3 weeks ugh), I need to make a choice about where I see myself in 10 years. Luckily I am single with no kids, so I only have to consider myself. I do have a dog, but my mom is practically begging me to go to Australia so she can take care of her for two years. If I get in, I will probably converse with my adviser, have a couple sleepless nights, crunch some numbers and then make a decision. And then second guess the decisions until I start the grad program.

I do think that if I went to Flinders I would be a better clinician than if I stayed in the US. I don't mean that as an insult to school in the US, but the way Flinders teaches is more suited to my learning style than the traditional US approach. Knowing this, I really hope I can figure out a way to make it work financially (IF I get in, of course). I know that my US options are still very good, so if I stay in the US it won't be the end of the world.
