Choosing a Post-grad field that is totally irrelevant to my undergrad Degree ?

Hey everyone!

Ok, let me start off  by introducing myself a bit.I am currently in my senior year ,doing undergrad in  Electronics and Communication engineering from a university in India.

Well, before I joined college I had no idea what course to take , but since I loved Physics ,Math, and programming( thanks to great teachers!) back in high school  and that I was sure I didn't want to take up medicine , I decided I'd go with ECE. While in college I initially loved the subjects and also since I like programming I have taken few programming courses too.I have done an internship at HCL in Computer Networks and Networking Protocols field. But as as time passed by my interests in other areas seemed to grow and honestly I started to realize I really didn't like ECE much , I mean I can get a job and all but i wouldn't be happy with it.I honestly don't think i'm the type who sits at a desk all day just  to debug circuits or design ICs or analyze signals.

I had my doubts right from the fourth semester , but it has just built up soo much that i'm itching to get out and do what I like. What I like? I love art. I am pretty good at sketching and painting on different surfaces(paper, wood, glass). I can say i'm kinda like the jack of all trades.I like science , and I like art - I like to sing, stitch, write, cook and draw. But I spend most of my "hobby time " in art stuff. And I have considerable amount of work to show.

But I got pretty less "hobby time" in college or even if i did get i thought it would be a waste of my time and that i could spend it on doing course work.So my participation in extra curricular activities was pretty low in college. I can say I went for a diploma java course in the summer , and an MUN in college, and I self-learnt  graphic design in Adobe illustrator and Photoshop- another summer . Thats it.  Though I have done lot of mini-projects in my field, its actually a compulsion in our college to do a project every sem for every subject.

I wrote my GRE. Got 322. Q- 168, V- 154. Also my toefl score is 102.

Now , I really want to go into the arts ,a Graphic design or a fashion design course or maybe into a drama course.

But since its post grad, is it possible for me to switch fields right now ? Is their any other way I can do it ?

I'm feeling so helpless right now. I have to start applying to universities in the US. So I have to start my SOP and other stuff. But now i'm confused what to write about if i go to art school? what will they expect ?

Any help is appreciated.

It's not unheard of to switch fields like this, but you may need to take some college-level courses to demonstrate that you can do well in such a different field (and for your own benefit - how do you know you'll like formal study of art and be committed to a grad program if you haven't studied it in school before?).

I'm in the humanities, but I assume most fine arts programs will also want to see a portfolio of work and will expect you to be able to discuss art theory and explain your approach in a formal artist statement - you can certainly produce a portfolio on your own outside a class setting and familiarize yourself with predominant scholarship, but you'll be doing some catchup work. You could also look into whether there are some short-term conservatory programs you could do that would allow you to hone some skills and produce a portfolio before applying to degree programs. Most drama programs will probably require an audition, so that's a whole other kind of thing to prepare for.

I'd also say that if you're considering programs as diverse as fashion design, drama, and graphic design it would definitely be to your benefit to take some time to take classes and do research into each of those paths to figure out what appeals to you before you start actually looking into schools.m

I am on the same boat. So did you find your clarification? What kind of courses are you going to join in India?

Just as brown_eyed_girl said, you need to take graduate courses in Art. Perhaps try the courses at your local university or some MOOCs on coursera or edx. All the best!
