Going through the applications for my prospective schools, some of them request a CV, some a resume, and one actually has 2 separate links to let you upload a CV or a resume.

So my question is: what do I actually upload? If it says resume, am I okay uploading my 4-page CV, or should I create a 1-2 page stripped-down version for this option?

The CV is the standard for academia. It should focus on your academic self. This includes conferences you attended and presented at, courses/workshops you've taught, internships, informal as well as formal experiences, honors/honor societies, participation in leadership, etc etc This is how you highlight what a successful and well-rounded academic you're shaping up to be. Look at some profs and grad students in the field.

The resume often just has work history, volunteer history, education, and skills... It is quite different from a CV and unless it is required for an application, I would skip it. For me at least, there is nothing that my resume might offer than my CV doesn't deal with in a better more approachable way.

I know the difference between a resume and CV. I'm mainly asking if I can submit my CV where it asks for a resume.

Okay guess I misunderstood the question.

I would upload what they ask for. If you are choosing between a resume and a CV pick a CV. If all they want is a resume, then submit that.

I think it is odd that they would ask for a resume and NOT a CV, since I'm assuming you're going for an academic  based program (as opposed to something that is more along the lines of a certification program).

If they just ask for a resume I'd be really hesitant to submit a CV, since a huge part of the process is just doing exactly what they're asking you to. Honestly, I would contact the admissions staff and ask for clarification, since a CV is the norm.

Although it sounds like we all know the common definitions for resume and CV and the differences, I think it is still worth clarifying to the school what they are asking for. Sometimes, people use CV and resume interchangeably. So, I think you should just ask if there is a page limit on the resume document and make sure whatever you submit follows those guidelines.
