Lisboa Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Hi there, I am applying to M.A. programs with an emphasis in Portuguese/Lusophone languages. Some of the universities are asking for a writing sample. Long story short, after moving to two different countries, a flood, and a closed email account, I have only a few, small samples that I don't feel reflect what the universities are looking for. One university told me, "The topic is entirely up to you. Basically, what we want to see in the WS is that you can take an idea and develop it clearly and in an engaging manner." What type of paper would you write? A very lengthy personal statement? A textual analysis, a research paper? I need ideas here. I have two months to have it complete and it should be about ten to fifteen pages, all in Portuguese, of course. Thanks for any feedback or ideas!

I would write something in line with your research interests (the research you want to pursue in graduate school). A lengthy personal statement would not be appropriate if they are asking for a separate writing sample.
