Inbal Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Hey, So I'm actually an undergrad student, and I am now facing with applying for the next semester and a little confused... As someone who aims to study SLP, should I be taking interpersonal communication or public speaking? The curriculum says it doesn't matter but I would appreciate some help. Thanks so much, Inbal.
jmk Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 No, public speaking or personal communication are not required. I do know that sometimes those classes are a university graduation requirement, but not for speech. I would schedule an appointment with an academic counselor at your university, as well as an appointment with an academic counselor for your department. They will be able to advise you best. Are you currently a Communicative Disorders or Speech Pathology major? The only things you should focus on are: 1. Classes in your major 2. Graduation requirements from your university to graduate 3. ASHA breadth pre-reqs, which may be covered in your general ed (Chemistry or physics, bio, stats, etc.)
amc91 Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Like JMK said, these courses are not required or considered when applying for grad school. Definitely make an effort to take statistics, physics or chemistry and a biological science, as most/many grad programs requires this, even if not all are required by ASHA (yet). As an undergrad, even though i knew from the beginning I was going to be a CSD major, I opted for different math courses and lab sciences to fulfill the required credits at my school (geology, business math etc). As a junior and senior, I had to make time to take chemistry (though physics is a better options for most programs), biology and statistics. It was just an inefficient use of my time/courses, so focus on that!
