Any rule of thumb for spacing of SOP?

The majority of my grad school program applications have no (official) word limit or formatting requests.  Has anyone gathered the prefered spacing preference?  Unfortunately since so many of mine have no preference I'm not even able to gather the information circumstantially.  

One friend says double spaced but I wonder if they want that since they seem to want succinct papers, I feel like double spaced makes the essay look longer...any thoughts?

i have single spaced for all of them. 

but i just hate double spaced, looks childish. maybe do 1.5 if youre not sure?

I did all mine single spaced. I think it's a safe route unless otherwise designated.
