Has anyone here successfully petitioned another foreign language in place of the German language requirement in many programs when German is less relevant to their concentration? Currently looking to do a Renaissance/Baroque specialty, and know French, Italian, and Spanish in varying degrees of fluency, but no German... so are those programs automatically out for me?

German is relevant to essentially every field of Art History because the discipline started in Germany. It's certainly relevant to renaissance and baroque, and you will have a hard time doing historiographical work and taking your exams without it. I wouldn't worry about not having when you apply though, you can work on it during your first couple years.
