rishavch6693 Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 (edited) Hi! I have applied for admission in MS program in Mechanical Engineering. I had contacted a prof. there prior to filling up my form. He did mention that my qualifications are good and he will look out for my application once it is available in the admission office. After 2 more mail exchanges, I haven't talked to him for more than 2 months now. Considering that the review process must have started by now, should I contact him again now? (Read: What should I write to let my existence known to him?) Edited January 9, 2016 by rishavch6693 diplomacy
magnetite Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 I'm curious about this as well. I had a phone 'interview' with a POI back in September. It went well, I think. He basically tried to sell me on applying to his university and didn't ask much about me. In my initial email I included a broad overview of my research interests, as well as my CV. I haven't contacted him after the interview and the application deadline was mid December. Should I email him again, to try to keep my name familiar to him?
sjoh197 Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 (edited) I friended mine on LinkedIn this week.... Since he accepts and looked at my profile, I'm hoping he'll remember me. Edited January 10, 2016 by sjoh197

I'm not sure if I'd want to send a LinkedIn invite to this particular POI, since I have no other connection to him. I'm also curious how long it's been since you've had any contact with your POI. sjoh197 Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Yes, he is indeed connected to some of my connections (research advisors, professors I know well, etc). We haven't really talked much since I met him at the beginning of the fall semester to discuss research, tour his lab, etc. I realize my method of reaching out again obviously doesn't work out for a lot of people... But you never know if it might be useful.
LIMeqCMB Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Perhaps you should email your POI(s), say something along the lines of "Thank you again for the guidance you gave me while I was preparing my application. I have submitted my application, and in the meantime, I have some more questions. [Insert questions here.]" I had ended up putting off the application process for a year. So my biggest concern was that, after 11-13 months of having absolutely no contact with POIs after the first couple of emails and not even telling them that I decided to wait on applying, I'd look like a total jerk/idiot/whatever-you-want-to-call-me. I swallowed my pride, told them (8 months after they never received my application) that I had decided not to apply for reason X, thanked them for the help they had given me, and came up with some new question to ask them to show I still had interest. They all responded favorably, and I had gone a year without saying anything.
Yav Friendly Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Read some of his publications and say I have a new idea!
