I applied to the MICaB and MCDB&G PhD programs at the University of Minnesota (the application deadlines were Nov. 30th and Dec. 1st, respectively). A friend of mine got an interview offer for MCDBG just before Christmas. The interviews for both programs are the last weekend in January and the first two weekends in February.

Here's the thing--I haven't heard ANYTHING. No interview offers, no rejections, nothing. The online application system says "awaiting program decision" for both. I don't know if they do it on a rolling basis or not. I submitted both applications on the deadline date.

How long should I wait before I email the program(s)? Arranging travel isn't an issue since I live in Minnesota and could go to the campus with virtually no notice. I'm assuming I wasn't accepted, but I want a definitive answer so I can start applying for research jobs and apartment hunting in Minneapolis. If I don't get in, I plan to reapply next year.

Do not email the programs as it is not necessary.  I would suggest at this point you assume you have been rejected and begin applying for research jobs.  The worst that happens is you get an invite last minute and have job interviews but if you get in then you can always leave the research job it is not like you are forced to stay there forever. Since the interviews are occurring in the next few weeks you'll likely not be already working before the final decisions are made thus it is really easy to decline a job if something were to change in the next few weeks.

Hi, I am applying biochem in UMN too, and I had heard about some rummors that the Dept. is on the rolling mode, so since you submitted your application at the deadline, you should be patient and waitting the decision.

I would email and ask. I was in a similar situation and when I asked, they told me I wasn't offered an interview. It won't hurt.
