Hey. So who else has been offered a place at UCSC and is going to the 3rd March orientation?

Also are there any current UCSC Lit students on here who'd be willing to answer a few questions/give some advice?

I was offered a spot and as it stands, I'm planning on going to 3rd March to check the place out! Just trying to figure out some of the logistical issues (like planes only landing at San Jose, still 30 miles away from Santa Cruz). I guess we'll see one another there?

I'd also be interested in any perspectives on the program that current students might be willing to offer.

Excellent, look forward to meeting you! Same re logistics -- I'm flying in from the UK to SFO, still trying to figure it out financially, really want to spend a few days in San Francisco but not sure I can swing it $$wise. Hoping to get to Santa Cruz the day before and stay for 2 nights in that hotel they recommended, then airbnb in the city for a couple of nights to get a feel for the place/justify the 11 hour flight. Do you plan on staying long? As all the rooms at that hotel are shared, I'm guessing ppl will be put 2 to a room?

I'm also planning to get to SC the day before and stay two nights. I'd like to stay longer and do something like what you're planning, but I'm still doing my final semester of undergrad and can't afford to miss too many days. I'll already be missing a lecture on one of my favorite chapters of Ulysses as it is! :(

I'm applying for the MA but haven't heard anything back yet - hopefully you're all pHD people? :)

Yep, PhD (well, hopefully a PhD anyway) here! Good luck to you; I think MA decisions almost always come later than PhD?

Overall I have heard from current graduate students that the area is highly expensive for graduate students; the ones I heard back from, on the other hand, said many positive things about the nurturing social/ intellectual community at UCSC.

I look forward to seeing you all who attend March 3rd.

Yeah, that about sums up my investigations as well. My only concern with this school would be monetary, as the cost of living seems astronomically high and the DGS suggested that fellowships are extremely rare with over 90% of funding coming in the form of TA-ships. This is apparently the case for most UC schools?

Same here re money. I've heard they have a bit more money than usual this year, hence admitting internationals. Dunno how that'll impact funding packages tho.
