repatriate
When I mentioned the cost of applying, a professor told me to ask departments for fee waivers. He said that many will grant them, especially for applicants they might be interested in. Has anyone tried approaching departments about fee waivers (other than through proscribed methods). Did you have success? How did you broach the topic? Edited November 14, 2009 by repatriate
NsciApp
I got fee waivers for being a McNair scholar, and I also saw that schools offer income-based waivers. If you did your taxes in 2008 and are under their cutoffs you may be eligible... not sure about just asking for a waiver...

I do not meet any of the "standard" fee waiver categories such as income.
Eyetea
I did get fee waiver from s school after a speaking to a professor who was very interested in me. He got the department to waive the fee for me. I'm in the sciences though (Chemistry) and don't know if the same would apply for you.
