I'm checking, did anyone else get an email from Donna Dyer that said " You’re one of our top admitted candidates, so I wanted to send you a note and say hello."? I would feel really honored to get this, but I have a sneaking suspicion that all the accepted students are considered "top admitted candidates". If not, looks like I should try fighting for some more aid.. :P

Donna has very limited time, so if she really emailed you, I think it'd be for a real reason. =) You're probably awesome, and I hope you come to Admitted Students Weekend so you can find out if we're awesome...

Regardless, you should ask for more aid if you think you need it or if you have a higher offer from another school. =) It's never a bad thing to do, as long as you go about it honestly and respectfully, and really do intend on coming to Duke if you get the money you ask for. The worst thing they can do is say no!

I would love to be there, but alas I am still in Ukraine for my Peace Corps service. I'm SUPER debt averse (after taking out a ridiculous amount for undergrad) so hopefully I can get a little more! Excited to meet all of you when school starts in the fall.

Wait listed :/

Pretty bummed out. Emailed them to figure out how the process works for those on the list. If anyone is on the same boat, lemme know!

Congrats to all that were admitted!

I was wait-listed as well. :/  It's an amazing school, so while I have offers at other institutions, I may end up frantically checking my email in June to see if I get a positive response academically and financially.

Anyone know if they wait-list a lot of people and/or if they rarely take students off the list? I'd imagine Duke's yield to be quite high, with the program's stature and financial aid, but I may be wrong.

But most other schools require a deposit or commitment by April/May. June is too far away to wait for something that might not happen! I emailed asking about how exactly the process works.

If Duke is one of your top choices, I suggest letting them know that! Then when it's time to look at the waitlist, your name may very well pop out at them. Give them reasons to say yes to you. =)

Essentially, if you want to start graduate school this fall no matter what, you need to put down a deposit by the deadline to one of the schools you're accepted in. If Duke takes you off the waitlist, and you still want to come, then you forfeit the deposit at the other school and enroll at Duke. If you don't get off the waitlist at Duke, then you go to the other school, which hopefully you took a good look at it and decided it would be a good choice anyway. If it's Duke or bust for you, then don't accept another spot, wait for Duke, and if you don't get taken off the waitlist, be prepared to apply again next year.

Personally, I suggest putting a deposit in at some school as long as you find the offers/ choices acceptable. Grad school is a big and important choice, but I lived with it after I was denied from my dream school, and selected one I thought was still pretty good and had what I was interested in. Nine times out of ten, it'll probably work out... =)

Thank you! This is very helpful information! Hopefully they get back to me before I put down a deposit somewhere else. Still hopeful that Duke sends me some good news soon.
