DanielBean Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Hey guys, so I'm a BA Economics graduate from UBC and also doing the MPA (Master of Public Administration) program at Queen's. I wanted to see if anyone has go into a PhD program in Canada without a BA in Political Science. I'm not sure if MPA is good enough or not to apply for example to U of T or UBC for their PhD Political Science program and so I'm contemplating whether or not I should apply to their MA Political Science first then PhD. My research interests are mostly on Public Policy and Political Economy (mostly leftist ideologies). Thanks for any advice.
twinsora Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Yes it is possible. I can't speak from personal experience, since both my BA and MA are in Political Science, but I have heard of people who have gotten into Political Science PhD's with semi-relevant BA/MA's. ie: Philosophy BA/MA to Political Science PhD's in Political Theory; International/development studies MA's into Political Science PhD's in IR.
CarefreeWritingsontheWall Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 I know two people who went from completely unrelated fields to political science - one from genetics and one from commerce.
