Silence from most schools I applied to?

I applied to a total of 11 schools this cycle for pure math- the schools are all listed in my signature. I've gotten one acceptance with funding (but for a master's), one rejection, and every one of the other nine has yet to give any decision.

The one positive thing is I have a visit at Virginia Tech this weekend, so that seems promising. But to hear absolutely nothing from eight of them seems insane. Are math departments just slower to put out decisions than most programs? When should I expect to hear back (and should I contact schools to ask when I will hear back)?
