chickadee Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I'm going to be starting a PhD program in the fall and need to brush up on my languages so that I can (hopefully) pass at least one of the placement tests when I begin. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for summer courses in French and/or Italian, either in the US or abroad. I'm in Philadelphia and will be moving to Boston to attend MIT. Thanks in advance for any advice!
FreakingOut Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Rowan University (in Glassboro, NJ about 20 minutes from Philly) offers French courses in the summer. The courses are centered around "French in Action," which is really a horrible way to teach new students; however, it is GREAT for people looking to brush up their skills. http://www.rowan.edu
rising_star Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 If you've studied before, get the books and tapes that the Foreign Service uses and then pick a classic French text and practice translating it with a dictionary. That would probably be just as good of prep as paying for a course.
