Mathētēs Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 Hi friends, Do you think it would be immature, worldly, less than scholarly, or other negative attributes to write in my SOP that one of the reasons I am applying to a specific master's program is because their department's average funding is generous? I would first describe the other important reasons I am interested in their department, but funding is part of the attraction. Do you think this frankness would help my application or hurt it?
captiv8ed Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I don't see how it would help. It might not hurt but it might. I would put it in the "why risk it?" category. Others may feel differently though.
Jennszoo Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I am by no means an SOP expert, but I think of it as putting it in a resume. LIke your objective "To earn the highest salary possible". Well yeah, sure we all want that, but its tacky to say. SO I would leave it off. Although if asked, I do plan to mention in an interview that assistanceship opportunities will be a deciding factor for me.
modernity Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I think it could hurt, especially when fit is supposed to be the most important thing about grad school apps. I agree to think of it resume wise, or even like a date. Sure we all want the highest paying job or a rich husband/wife... but it's supposed to be a side benefit to something you already love and would want even without all the money. If they offer a generous package, I am sure they know it and are aware people apply for that reason.
mudlark Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 If you really want to include it, you might hedge it in language like "University of X's strong history of supporting MA students".
