Hi all. I've posted on here about my frustration with my admissions cycle this year (1 admit out of 11, but poor funding; still waiting on one program) and I have some potentially good news. I've been offered an English teaching position at a university in China for the 2016/17 year. It doesn't pay much, but it's something.

Thoughts on this? As of this moment, my options are teaching in China or taking out buttloads of loans for a MA program. I also have another job interview in two weeks for a job in the US working with a non-profit (pay isn't great either, but like China, it's enough if I budget).

I would totally go to China! What an amazing opportunity! You're an Anthropology major, right? Do you do cultural anthropology? If so, I imagine that this will look amazing on your applications if you choose to re-apply. Actually, it will look amazing regardless of your subfield, in my opinion.

I say go for it :)

Yup, I'm majoring in anthropology (cultural) and modern languages and literatures (not Chinese, unfortunately, but Spanish and French).

I'm teaching in Japan, which is not the same as teaching in China (of course), but there are a lot of similarities and I think it would be an amazing opportunity for you! China is really cheap, so even if you aren't making much, you should be able to save on cost of living.

I've loved my time here in Jaoan and I think it's given me a lot of time to think about what I want to do and who I want to be. I've traveled all around Asia and met some amazing people.

Univetsity positions are usually very good and highly respected. You have to be careful with juku/hogwans (the Japanese/Korean words for after-school private programs... Like tutor schools), because they sometimes don't treat their teachers very well (at least in Koream and to a lesser extent Japan), but a university should follow the laws and treat you well.

In what part of China would you be living?
