Ziz Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 I'm going to post this in the Philosophy forum too, but just in case: The Duke University Dept of Philosophy regrets to announce that it is suspending admission to its Ph.D. Program for the year 2010-2011 only. (Of course, fees will be refunded to those who have already applied.) Due to a much larger number of acceptances of admission-offers in the last few years, the Ph.D. program has outstripped its steady-state enrollment by approximately 50 %, and must now reduce its size somewhat. We expect to resume normal admissions next year for the 2011-2012 academic year. I hope this doesn't happen to other departments too.
tarski Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on that. He also has a post open for comments for other universities to say if they're not admitting anyone (so far just UCSC philosophy is not admitting anyone, and Boulder and USF say they're both doing well). http://leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2009/11/schools-cutting-phd-admissions-because-of-budget-issues.html
LateAntique Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Lame! Fortunately, the program to which I'm applying at Duke has less people than normal.
modernity Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 This already happened to me as well, different school/discipline. I think it's going to be a hard year for this sort of thing.
coyabean Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Yeppers for me, too. One program was halted and I just found out that another is taking a grand total of THREE candidates this year. Three. Just...three.
