chicagosociology Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Hi all, I am very interested in the Sociology of Education, and Temple University has several professors who are in this research area. Temple is not a highly ranked program, but located in Philadelphia. Does anyone have much information about their program? Thanks.
graddamn Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I know a little bit about the program. I one of my sociology professors was a visiting professor from Temple emphasizing sociology of education, fittingly enough. I know that Temple's program is fairly low ranked, but the school has been on a growth spurt recently, and the professor I took a class with was pretty interesting, her specialty was race and higher education. However, I do also know that Temple is in a pretty bad part of Philadelphia and a lot of students who live in the area are unhappy with the campus security. I am not sure how much of a concern this is for you, but just something to keep in mind. Sociological_Spud 1
chicagosociology Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 Thanks for that information. I had heard that some grad students complained about terrible grad housing there (I saw some pictures).
alexis Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Thanks for that information. I had heard that some grad students complained about terrible grad housing there (I saw some pictures). There are a lot of good options off campus in better parts of the city, though, if you were interested in that.
graddamn Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 That's definitely true. Philadelphia is cheap to live in, as cities go. South Philly is a lot of fun and great, cheap housing. Get a bike or a SEPTA pass and you're good to go.
chicagosociology Posted December 15, 2009 Author Posted December 15, 2009 thanks a lot for the info. Taking it into consideration.
dcdaria Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I know this is an old post, but I'm wondering if anyone who goes to Temple can give more information on how they feel about the program. I already live in Philadelphia, so I'm familiar with the area and things like that. Thanks!
