Nate92 Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 (edited) Hello, I will be attending school for an I/O Psychology master's degree in the near future. If possible, I would like to do mental health counseling as well, on a part-time basis. My question is: After completing a master's degree in I/O Psych, what is my best option to prepare myself to do this? Instead of completing an entirely separate degree, is there additional or supplemental schooling I can complete? A friend of mine mentioned a certificate might be possible. I'm just exploring my other options. Thank you! Nate Edited July 13, 2016 by Nate92 Grammar
Seaz Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Hello Nate, I am interested as to why you want to do part time mental health counseling? Your masters in I/O would most likely be very far from what a counseling degree would be. I do not really have any answers for you per say. I am interested in I/O psych myself but have experience with mental health agencies. Most individuals that worked their had masters of social work or in counseling/clinical. However, I have known of mental health agencies providing training to lead skills groups for mental health issues (ie: emotion dysregulation skills using cbt or dbt). Possibly check for APA accredited sources for counseling masters degrees, you might be able to shorten completion by a very large chunk due to finishing core courses with I/O. Let me know what the background story is! im interested
