Hello,

I will be attending school for an I/O Psychology master's degree in the near future. If possible, I would like to do mental health counseling as well, on a part-time basis. My question is: After completing a master's degree in I/O Psych, what is my best option to prepare myself to do this? Instead of completing an entirely separate degree, is there additional or supplemental schooling I can complete? A friend of mine mentioned a certificate might be possible. I'm just exploring my other options.

Thank you!

Nate

Hello Nate,

I am interested as to why you want to do part time mental health counseling? Your masters in I/O would most likely be very far from what a counseling degree would be.

I do not really have any answers for you per say. I am interested in I/O psych myself but have experience with mental health agencies. Most individuals that worked their had masters of social work or in counseling/clinical. However, I have known of mental health agencies providing training to lead skills groups for mental health issues (ie: emotion dysregulation skills using cbt or dbt). Possibly check for APA accredited sources for counseling masters degrees, you might be able to shorten completion by a very large chunk due to finishing core courses with I/O.

Let me know what the background story is! im interested :)
