Sebastian24 Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 For any current or former EAPSI applicants, how did you word the initial contact with prospective host researchers? I can't decide which of the following options is more appropriate and likely to be well-received: "I propose to research XYZ using methods XYZ. Would you be willing to host me and fund the proposed research?" "My general interests are XYZ. Do you have any ongoing projects in this research area that I could participate in during summer 2017?" I feel like Option 2 is more polite, but Option 1 conveys a "go-getter" perspective that could be desirable in certain circumstances. Unfortunately, my field of study/research methodology (field-based environmental science) requires costly equipment and support personnel that would not be covered by EAPSI funding, so asking the host to provide these (boldface in Option 1) is an elephant in the room that cannot be ignored. Does anyone have an opinion and/or insight into how you handled this when you were applying? Thanks in advance!
TieZhu Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 I unfortunately can't help with this fork in the road, but have a question myself about the EAPSI. Would it looked negatively upon to apply with a collaboration with an individual with which you have worked with in the past? IE the institute would be part of a more ongoing collaboration. I haven't found any information in the application instructions that suggests it would be worse or better to do this.
CISprague Posted November 26, 2016 Posted November 26, 2016 Just recently submitted my application for Japan (astronautical engineering). Just wondering what's going on with everyone else?
onetwothreefourfivesix Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 I also submitted for Japan! On Fast Lane is says "External Peer Review began on 12/12/16"
CISprague Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 @saber13, what subject area are you applying for? My status still says pending.

Biological Sciences. Did you check your status on Fastlane? When I login through research.gov I don't see the peer review thing.
CISprague Posted December 28, 2016 Posted December 28, 2016 My status says: External Peer Review began on 12/13/16 Not really sure what this implies.
CISprague Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Well, from the EAPSI 2016 forum, it looks like we will not hear about Japan until the beginning of February at least. Has anyone heard anything? I'm just really excited!
onetwothreefourfivesix Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 know man, I can't wait either. I'm not expecting anything until the end of the month at the earliest.
onetwothreefourfivesix Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 I just got my tentative offer for Japan! Tokyo here I come!
Dnic52 Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 I received my tentative offer today-yay!! Very excited, but also shocked to hear back so early.

CISprague Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 Has anyone received confirmation of their acceptance of the tentative offer? I've responded with acceptance, but have not heard anything back yet.
eliz_3 Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 I just got confirmation of the acceptance last night--tentative offer for China!
CISprague Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 Yea, but after you replied back, accepting the offer, did you receive any correspondence? I responded in Jan 12, and haven't heard back yet.
onetwothreefourfivesix Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 I emailed Elena a week after I accepted and she got back to me very quickly saying my response was noted. I'd shoot her an email if you're worried, but you're probably fine!
CISprague Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 In the previous handbooks and forums for the NSF EASPI, I saw that there was an orientation in DC sometime in March. Does anyone know if this will be happening for us this year?

It looks like they nixed it in favor of the three-part webinars, which I guess is cheaper for the NSF (though my labmate says the orientation was a lot of fun and we'll be missing out :( ) For those wondering (I guess we can keep a tally here), I'm also in the Tokyo, Japan EAPSI. EDIT: I responded with a "yes" as soon as I got the email, and Elena acknowledged my response yesterday. Edited January 25, 2017 by Brewbring

"Location-specific sessions: Dates and times to be determined (to be determined before Feb 3 session)". I think they just don't have a date yet.

Luckily, I am from DC, so I get to have a nice visit with my family :).

I think by location-specific they mean separate sessions for each destination (e.g., China, New Zealand, Australia, etc.). I'd love to be wrong though, a DC orientation would be great
CeeN Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Hey all, I did China last year and am doing Japan this year. I doubt that the DC orientation will happen this time; as someone else's labmate said, it was really fun! It was also during the Cherry Blossoms festival... Like Brewbring, I'd love to be wrong though.
CISprague Posted February 5, 2017 Posted February 5, 2017 I've actually asked; we are not doing the orientation this year unfortunately (...sigh, I live in DC). @CeeN I did not know you could do this programme two years in a row. Everyone, post your email addresses, so we can make a facebook group.
CeeN Posted February 7, 2017 Posted February 7, 2017 @CISprague: Yes, you could, as long as you apply to a different country the second time around as stated in the handbook.

We're going to get contact info of all EAPSI fellows on the March 3rd web meeting, so I think we can probably make a facebook group then. Should be more secure than posting them here
