Hey everyone,

This is my second year applying, so I'm really hoping to have more success this year than I did last year. That being said, I have a question for everyone applying/that has previously applied.

Most of the applications ask for us to submit 20 images, so I'm curious what everyone is taking that to mean. Are you guys submitting 20 separate pieces? Or are you submitting maybe 15 and then 5 detail images, or something to extent?

I'm really curious to hear answers spanning throughout the different mediums, so if you could also include that in your response, that would be great. Thanks!

Hi, I submitted 19 pieces with one detailed image (mostly paintings). Some programs even say on the admissions page that detail shots can be one of the 20 images.

I'll probably go with 15+5, cause there's like 5 installation pieces and it's kind of hard to see.

I'm a bit worried that 15 might not br enoungh and thinking about ways to make it 17+3, but it's hard.

From what I can tell, having a couple of detail shots is totally fine, so long as there's an actual reason for them (like with a complex sculpture or a large installation).  Seems to me that in that case, 5 is a totally acceptable number.

A lot of the schools I am looking at clarify whether they allow detail shots and how many under their portfolio guidelines. For instance, Yale wants 16 images, but has stated they will only accept 2 detail shots max. Although I can't comment on programs that don't make these clarifications :P

What I'm wondering is whether exhibition photos are acceptable? This isn't really mentioned on any of the applications I've seen. Some of my work is installation based which I will definitely be including, but what about gallery shots of multiple pieces hanging on the wall?

Thanks!

I'm considering installation shots a detail shot. Is your work better understood in context of multiple pieces grouped together? If not, I would imagine it's better to include just 1 piece/photo. I believe that some departments even explicitly ask to keep it to 1 piece/photo.

Thanks for your thoughts!

There is one body of work I will be submitting that is meant to exist in groups. For that reason I see the installation shot from the show necessary, but does that make the individual shots of these works detail shots?

I also make installations, so I'm generally not feeling the restrictions in detail shots over here. pfhmmmp

upload 1 photo, put the rest on a blank page on your site, provide a link in the info section. Then. put google analytics on the page and obsessively check the traffic to see if theyve looked.
