Help! Sociology degree/career right for me?

Question

Posted (edited)

Hello!

I am actually a college freshman but I could not find any other forum to get help. I am currently taking intro to sociology and I love it! I do really well on the tests and the content is easy and fun for me to learn. I recently talked to my adviser about selecting a major and she advised me to speak to my sociology professor, which I did. My professor told me about she double majored in criminal justice and sociology. She also said how a sociology degree is really broad so I have options. I was recently looking into a career as a Forensic Psychologist. I have always enjoyed reading and studying about crimes and criminals, specifically serial killers. I also want a career that I enjoy, pay is above decent, and I feel like I am doing something meaningful with my life by helping people in someway.

Thank you in advance!

Hello!

I have a Bachelors degree in Speech pathology, but have been looking into Masters programs in Sociology. I took an Intro to Sociology course and loved it. That was the only Sociology course I got a chance to take and unfortunately, I don't have a large background in the field. The good thing about Sociology programs is they don't require GRE scores (big yay!) and you don't need to have a background in the field. I actually applied to a few graduate programs in Sociology just a couple of days ago. Waiting to get more information about my application.

Anyway...I'm not too sure about specific job opportunities for someone with a Bachelors degree in Sociology, but I know there are a variety of fields you can go into. The ones I'm most interested in are teaching sociology at a university level (Masters degree required), working in a healthcare facility (hospital or rehab), and working within the community. Since I don't have a Bachelors degree in the field and I don't know too much about it, I did a google search and looked for more information about Sociology. There isn't very much information out there based on my google searches. The only somewhat decent website I found is www.asanet.org. It's a pretty good website that gives good information about Sociology. You may find more information about Forensic Psych there. I think that would be a pretty good field to go into, especially since you like crimes and criminals. And the pay should be pretty good too.

Finally, you could always contact a counselor or academic advisor within the sociology department at your university (and other institutions too) and ask them more about the major and job opportunities available.

Okay, it seems like I'm rambling a bit, but I do hope this information helps. I'm just as unsure as you are about the field, but I'm sure there are plenty of resources out there. We just need to research and find them.

Keep in touch and we can continue discussing Sociology programs if you wish. Good luck! :o)
