optimusP Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 You could email (even anonimously if you fear for your application) about the decisions. I'm sort of in the same boat, only waiting for Cornell's rejection to accept my first offer Thanks ORmalv. I still can wait for a couple of weeks, but I think that probably I am in the rejection list, because they are taking so long for answering. Has any of you got acceptation/rejection from there?
ieorom Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 hi guys, any news for Umich (PhD IOE)? I have never received any news from them. So sad.......
echoxg Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 hi guys, any news for Umich (PhD IOE)? I have never received any news from them. So sad....... I got the rejection from IOE@Umich long long ago. ~~~~
sahilb Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Does Cornell M.Eng ORIE give out admits all on 1 day altogether (I read somewhere in this forum about that day being 6th March last year) or on separate days ? Because someone in this forum got an admit on 24th February, while someone I know got an admit on 2nd March that too with a 5000$ fellowship ! And I have still not heard of any rejections from Cornell, this is making me even more confused and tensed. Can anyone clear it out for me ?
floyd Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 hi guys, any news for Umich (PhD IOE)? I have never received any news from them. So sad....... I got invited to UMich's invite weekend, but no acceptance yet. Someone else got admitted with aid already. Both domestic applicants.
darlingguoguo Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I got invited to UMich's invite weekend, but no acceptance yet. Someone else got admitted with aid already. Both domestic applicants. Same here~ no acceptance yet but invited to the visit weekeng... Wonder they make their decisions before or after the visitation weekend...
ieorom Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I got invited to UMich's invite weekend, but no acceptance yet. Someone else got admitted with aid already. Both domestic applicants. Matt tells they will give me the application status this week, but I do not think I will be admitted or invited , since a bunch of guys have received the admission or invitation already.
martizzle Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Has anyone got news from Cornell ORIE PhD program. I saw in the results section just one acceptation in early February. Any information would be useful, I have 1 offer which ends in one week and I need to know if acceptations in ORIE have been made yet. Thanks I know it's not decent/right....but won't it be possible to simply accept that offer and later decline it when/if you have a better offer....idk, guys help me out. I mean, why can't applicants mess with grad schools the way they mess with our heads? They don't treat us right, why do we have to treat them nice/with respect? I mean...what stops applicants from simply accepting offers from schools, and later declining those offers for a better offer?....The only reason I would hesitate to do it (other than I've not yet been accepted anywhere), or not do it, is because I try to live by certain principles. Is there a law, grad-school-oversight-committee or something that deals with this?

Ohhhhhhh~~ really~~this week!!! But there has been only a few admissions (2, actually, on the results board)... guess the majority is still on the way.....
caulfieldh Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Just my two cents, MIT has a HUGE name recognition for anyone in engineering. It is the school to go to, and anyone who graduated from there will get a decent faculty position anywhere they please. Princeton is a newer program, OR started at MIT. Princeton does have the reputation of a great Math program, but its engineering is not respected among top tier engineering colleges. If you're asking for the best reputation, it is not even close, I would rank at least 7 schools above Princeton(Michigan, Cornell, Columbia, GaTech, Standford, Berkley, and MIT) and MIT is the top tier(from what I heard, Cornell and Standford are close, but MIT is top). That being said, make sure you have a potential adviser who is nice and someone who you would like to work with. If not, your looking at a long, hard, frustrating 5-7 years. I think you're right that MIT is a bigger name in OR than is Princeton. MIT's program is much older, for one. But I'm just wondering, why do you think so few people apply to MIT ORC compared with other OR programs? Even on this thread, not too many are applying there. More are applying to Cornell and GTech etc. If MIT is so big wouldn't it attract more applicants? Do you think it's a case of very high self-selection?

I know I did not apply(I would have applied into Systems, not OR) because I figured my application money can be spent elsewhere. Also, MIT is very specialized in OR, where as many other IEOR programs have human factors, manufacturing, etc(see Mich, GaTech, Purdue, and other larger programs). So if you want to do OR specifically, MIT is the best. If you have other focuses(focusi?) then you would not apply to MIT at all. Edited March 3, 2010 by floyd

Is there a law, grad-school-oversight-committee or something that deals with this? While this is possible, I would like to point out that the school you are screwing over is the one that responded earlier. People on the waiting list and the university are the entities who suffer. Your best strat would be call up(not email) both schools, tell them you are waiting to hear back from schools or that you need to hear back from them. If they are not willing to budge, they don't want you that much, and maybe you don't need to go there, or they won't even extend an offer. At least give the schools a chance by contacting them before messing with their systems. BTW, if its a very large MS program, i.e. Columbia, they are more able handle people accepting and then dropping out. Smaller programs have difficulties with this.
ieorom Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Ohhhhhhh~~ really~~this week!!! But there has been only a few admissions (2, actually, on the results board)... guess the majority is still on the way..... Yes, this week~~ Do you know how many fresh PhDs IOE will recruit every year? no more than 10?
bolani Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 hi guys, any news for Umich (PhD IOE)? I have never received any news from them. So sad....... I got admitted about 2 weeks ago(my friend did too) on the same day. A lot of people got visit offers but no admits yet though. You might be on waitlist b/c a lot of people got rejected during that same week. Good luck!

Is there a law, grad-school-oversight-committee or something that deals with this? ok....well technically you can do that, as long as you finish "switching" between schools by April 15th. According to their resolution thing, if it belongs to that group of schools, you can do that. It's your right...the good schools will recognize that and shouldn't really put you in a bad position like that to begin with. http://www.cgsnet.org/portals/0/pdf/CGS_Resolution.pdf

coolmicky Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 How you guys reply to a university when they admit you with full financial aid while you can't make decision right now since you are waiting to hear from other universities? It's kind of difficult, you can't be too enthusiastic to make they believe that you'd definitely choose them while you can't be too unmoved to make them think you'd not choose them. What a subtle line...... Can anyone share a sample or give some suggestions? Thank you!

I'm really excited to receive an offer from SchoolX! " and since I got an invite I said "I'm looking forward to getting to meet you and members of your department. "
wifey99999999 Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Stanford MS&E rejection emails for MS applicants came out the first Friday of March of last year... So if I don't get any email from Stanford tomorrow, does that mean I have better chance of getting accepted?
testarossa Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 lol. I am not on the AdCom. I'm just saying that the rejections listed on the results search all came out on the first Friday of March of last year and that all acceptances came out on the following Monday. So I guess if you see MS&E rejects on the results section tomorrow and you don't get an email, then there's a good chance you may have been accepted and will be notified Monday. Who knows how they're going to do it this year, but tomorrow might be the big day. So nervous ..... I think last year Columbia started to send out rejections and acceptances for the MS OR around this time as well.

It does not make any sense doing so unless they want to keep the suspense / nervousness longer....
coolmicky Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Congratulations on the admission! where was that? Thank you very much! It's not IE, it's OM from UTD. I was really excited about it!
